Philippe Noiret (born October 1, 1930 in Lille , † November 23, 2006 in Paris ) was a French actor . He first played in the theater and later in 150 cinema and television films directed by important international film directors. Noiret was seen alongside almost all French actors of standing. He worked particularly often with the director Bertrand Tavernier .

life and work

Noiret's father, a textile merchant, had a passion for literature and poetry. Philippe Noiret spent his childhood in Toulouse (many years later he returned to the Occitania region and had a small country house as a second home near Carcassonne ). At first he found it difficult to take his first steps into an independent life. He failed the Baccalauréat exam for the highest school diploma three times . He made his debut with a supporting role in a film adaptation of the short novel Gigi by Colette . From 1950 he studied acting with Roger Blin at the Center Dramatique de l'Ouest in Paris.

In 1953, through the mediation of Jean-Pierre Darras, he was accepted into Jean Vilar's Ensemble des Théâtre national populaire in Paris, where he stayed for seven years. During this time he also appeared with Darras as an entertainer and comedian in a Paris nightclub. At the theater he met his future wife, the actress Monique Chaumette , whom he married in 1962.

Even before his big breakthrough, Noiret embodied a concise character in a supporting role in Topas, directed by Alfred Hitchcock . He became known in 1968 with the lead role in the film Alexander, the life artist , in which - fitting the zeitgeist - society's fixation on performance was questioned.

He played his most expressive roles in Louis Malle s Zazie (1960) as well as in Das große Fressen (1973) and Cinema Paradiso (1988). What was particularly emphasized about Noiret's acting skills was his great versatility. He often portrayed villains in many shades. The character depictions were often ironically broken. Because of his rather average-looking face, Noiret was initially not cast for romantic roles, but only for good-natured characters. Only after his appearance in the farce Das große Fressen did he receive offers for complex and contradicting roles. The great intensity in his role representations often resulted from the tension between a good-natured, soft habit on the one hand and abusive behavior and cynical verbal attacks on the other. His portrayal of the popular show master and alleged benefactor Christian Legagneur in the crime film Masken (1987) by Claude Chabrol can be seen as a prime example of this . He secretly makes fun of his audience and enjoys his cynicism.

In public, Noiret liked to cultivate the image of the elegant dandy , gourmet and humorous bon vivant with hat, white suit and cigar; he loved horses and wore expensive shoes. For decades, Noiret was one of the most popular French character actors and enjoyed great renown with critics and audiences at home and abroad.

Noiret died on November 23, 2006 in his home in Paris after a long period of serious cancer. He left behind his wife Monique Chaumette , who was occasionally also his professional partner, and their daughter Frédérique. Philippe Noiret found his final resting place on the Cimetière de Montparnasse in Paris .
