action

Egypt in 1934: When Edouard Binet's employer, the famous singer Jasmina, dies, he inherits a valuable gold ring with a large ruby from her. He decides to return to Europe and settle in his native Paris. On the ship, Edouard meets the young Sylvie Baron and sees the rich businessman Nemrod Lobetoum, whom he knows from his working hours, boarding. Edouard introduces Sylvie to Nemrod and is soon the fifth wheel on the car. While Edouard continues to Paris in Europe, Sylvie and Nemrod get out in Brussels and rent a luxury hotel. Sylvie visits her mother Louise and her little sister Antoinette in town. She brought both souvenirs from Egypt. During her visit, she also sees that Louise has one of her rooms, which she sublet to guests, is still empty.

Edouard suddenly appears in Brussels. He goes to Sylvie in the hotel, but cannot stay there, as Nemrod is known for his jealousy. Edouard secretly sees Nemrod counting bills in the next room. He has no money, but has the ruby ring, which he has a jeweler valued. Edouard plans to use the proceeds to lead a carefree life and is therefore shocked to learn that the ruby is a mere fake. Now Edouard can't even afford a hotel room. Sylvie offers him to sleep in her hotel room because Nemrod will be away for a few days. Edouard first follows Nemrod into the train. He returns to Sylvie much later than agreed. He is stunned and his coat has numerous blood stains on it. There are also innumerable banknotes in Edouard's coat pockets. The next day the newspapers reported that Nemrod was knocked down and robbed by an unknown person on the train - Nemrod, in turn, died of his injuries. Edouard has no memory of the crime and says that someone stole his coat from his compartment because he slept all night. Sylvie becomes insecure because she wants to believe him. She lets him billet in the free room in her mother's boarding house. Nobody finds out that Edouard and Sylvie know each other.

Louise Baron is taken with her new lodger. Edouard reports a lot about Egypt and presents himself as a cultivated and calm contemporary. One day he accompanies Louise to the hospital at her express request, where she secretly visits her ex-fiancé, the war invalid Albert, without her husband's knowledge. By letting Edouard in on her personal secret, a deeper bond develops between them. Meanwhile, Sylvie realizes that the police are on Edouard's heels. He, in turn, no longer wants to leave the house that has become home and hiding place for him. Sylvie now confesses to her mother that Edouard is the murderer of Nemrod. Louise can't believe it, especially since Edouard can't say anything about the act either. Nevertheless, she announces that she wants to have him out of the house the next morning. During the night Edouard wakes up screaming because he suddenly remembers the crime. He had shown Nemrod the ruby ring and wanted to hear a second opinion from him. Nemrod confirmed that the stone was a fake, especially since gemstones in Egypt always stay in the family and the ring should rather be a symbolic gesture. Edouard then saw Nemrod's wallet in the compartment and killed him out of greed. The new knowledge hits Edouard and he regrets the act. Louise wants to help him and organizes his escape to the Netherlands. However, this comes too late because the police surround the house and arrest Edouard. Shortly before his arrest, Edouard gives Louise the fake ruby ring and she promises to take care of him. In November 1934, the convicted Edouard was taken to the Ile de Ré . From here he will be shipped to the penal camp in Guiana ; Louise is on the island and says goodbye to Edouard as he and the other prisoners make their way to the ship.
