action

France in 1642. Intrigues are constantly being spun at the royal court. While King Ludwig XIII. officially ruled, in truth Cardinal Richelieu pulls the strings in the background in all politically important matters. His most powerful opponent is also the wife of his ruler, Anna of Austria . While Richelieu has sided with the king in line with his own ambitions for power, Queen Anna can completely rely on the loyalty of the Marquis de Cinq-Mars . Richelieu therefore strives for a break between the king and queen and pulls out all the stops to disavow Her Majesty in front of her own husband and consequently disempower her. This is the starting point of the story.

While this power struggle is raging behind the scenes, two men are on the road in France who couldn't be more different. One is an impoverished grand master with an extra-long nose, a cultivated word artist who also knows how to swing his sword. It is Cyrano de Bergerac , a poet and nobleman. The other is the young Gascogner d'Artagnan , hot-headed and bubbly, a young fellow who has left his homeland for Paris to look for the great adventure and to join the king's musketeers. On both paths, the young hot spur, an excellent fencing artist, and the one generation older, eloquent noblewoman meet. They complement each other perfectly and quickly become best friends. They decide to go the way together that will bring them numerous adventures and duels.

While the Dumas ' three musketeers , to which d'Artagnan will later belong, fight in the interests of the king (and thus de facto Richelieu), Cyrano is on the road in the service of his queen. And despite their different masters, who should actually turn them into opponents, the two stand together and have many an ostrich to fight out against villains and bandits. Love is also not neglected when both men meet two women who turn out to be courtesans : the shapely, passionate Ninon de Lenclos and the rather gentle, shy and girlish Marion de l'Orme . It soon seems that Cyrano and d'Artagnan are also rivals for the hearts of the beautiful. In the end, both men have remained poor, but have found the love of their lives.

The extensive costumes were created by Dario Cecchi, the film structures are by Jean Douarinou . The Hollywood veteran Nathan Juran is named as a second unit director. Nelly Kaplan served as a simple camerawoman for the second unit team.

Reviews

"If you look at the title of" Cyrano and D'Artagnan ", it doesn't sound much more promising than" Samson Meets Hercules ". (…) The action skimmed for two hours along degenduelles, which were taken quite arbitrarily from templates by Rostand and Dumas the elder. (...) If this cinematic basis appears thin, it will not be improved by the broad and artificial representation of José Ferrer, who here repeats the "Cyrano" role that won him an Oscar 14 years ago. Here he delivers a flat and clumsy appearance, while Jean-Pierre Cassels d'Artagnan rants around and in particular lacks any charm. Dahlia Lavi and Sylva Koscina understandably feel uncomfortable with their elaborate hairstyles and the de facto non-existent necklines. Everyone has to speak in rhyming couplets, a dilemma. "

- The New York Times, September 26, 1964

In the lexicon of international films , it says: “Political and love intrigues mix. Pompous coat and sword film, elaborate in decor and reconstruction of historical costumes. Entertaining, but somewhat theatrical adventure entertainment. "

“With his last works, two brightly colored history picture sheets, the director wanted to continue his heyday of historical picture sheets twice. But neither of the two outwardly pompous, but hollow in terms of content, two and a quarter hours long works, " Austerlitz " and "Cyrano and D'Artagnan", even came close to the staging power of Gance's once pioneering hymn to the Corsican emperor.
