Jean Douarinou (born June 17, 1906 in Cholon , French Indochina , today: Vietnam , † March 15, 1989 in France ) was a French production designer .

Live and act

Douarinou was born in the French colonial area of Indochina and received his artistic training at a school of applied arts (École des arts décoratifs). He then earned his living as an advertising artist, decorator, journalist and blacksmith. In 1932 Douarinou joined the film industry. Two years later he was able to work as an independent film architect for the first time. Until the early post-war period, Douarinou created almost exclusively the buildings for B-productions, with the exception of the gloomy masterpiece Game of Memory by Julien Duvivier , where Douarinou worked with his established colleague Serge Pimenoff .

In the course of the 1950s, his assignments became a little more ambitious. Jean Douarinou provided his most extensive and qualitatively most valuable decorations for Abel Gance's late works Austerlitz - the shine of an imperial crown and Cyrano and d'Artagnan , which testify to a high degree of show splendor. The production designer has occasionally also worked as a film editor. Jean Douarinou was married to the actress Madeleine Sologne , his brother was the cameraman Alain Douarinou (1909–1987).
