François Lesbuche is able to arrest a Chinese after a wild chase. In return for his release, he tells the investigators that a big coup is about to take place. The Chinese Chen regularly collects earnings from all Chinese traders in Paris to take them out of the country. Chen is now to be ambushed. François and his men lie in wait. François' former partner René Boirond also still lives in Paris. He relies on horses and loses as always, which is why he already owes almost everyone in the area who are on his heels for it. When he receives another “surefire” tip, he wants to borrow money, but his girlfriend Carmen doesn't give him anything anymore. He finally goes to Chen, who is counting money and therefore asks him to wait for him in the back yard. Shortly afterwards, Chen is ambushed. He throws the entire proceeds in a bag to René, who is supposed to flee with the money. However, the bag falls into the sewer and he himself is shot while trying to escape. François thinks he has recognized his friend, whom he has not seen for ten years, but is not sure. René tries in vain to find the bag. In the end, he has to admit that he now owes Chen around one million euros.
René manages to get Chen and his men to the supposed place of money and hang out in the sewer system. He also confesses to Chen that he lost the money. Chen threatens that he is a dead man as all the Chinese in Paris are keen to kill him. René turns to his friend, a doctor. He suggests changing roles: René assumes the identity of the deceased Jean Morzini, whom not a single relative asked about even six weeks after his death. The doctor again announced in the press that René had died. This can be confirmed by two fake reports. Shortly afterwards, René received two visits to the hospital, where René stayed until his funeral: first from Maud, who had prepared a great coup on behalf of Morzini, then from Marie, Morzini's daughter, who had never seen him . It turns out that Morzini was in prison for 20 years and before that he was a notorious burglar who mainly used explosives to work. Meanwhile, François has a new partner. The godson of his boss, the young Julien, wants to follow police life up close. His first assignment is to shadow René, who has revealed himself to François, who is grieving at his grave. Through the shading, Julien soon gets to know Marie too. She is so happy to have met her father that René is unable to tell her the truth. Through François, who is in constant radio contact with Julien, Julien and René get to know each other and Julien introduces himself to him as a little crook who spent five years in prison. In the evening Maud visits René again and gives him the plans for the big coup. Without further ado, René hires Julien for the implementation. He also packs him a bag with fake banknotes and lets it float in the sewer as a test. He hopes to find the old bag through the flow direction. In fact, after a while, he takes it for himself; but he believes he is fishing his prepared bag out of the water.
François later visits René “by chance” and is also initiated into the coup, although he and Julien pretend not to know each other. Together they carry out the break-in, whereby the client wants to have around 11 million euros in donations, which would be misappropriated anyway, stolen from a safe. The three of them blast their way through the building as instructed and empty the safe, diverting the sum that René owes the Chinese for themselves. The coup succeeds and Chen faints when suddenly René, believed dead, stands in front of him with the money. In the hotel, René realizes from François' presence that the prepared bag is in fact the real one. François, on the other hand, believes that René just tricked everyone and is still completely the same, and he doesn't contradict him. In order to regain his old identity, René Marie announced his departure in writing because he had to go far away. Some time later, the police found René as "homeless with memory loss". François is given the task of looking after René. Marie in turn is allowed to meet René again soon afterwards. François tells her that Morzini had to go into hiding and assume a new identity - his name is now René Boirond.

Die Briberlichen 3 - Return of a crook was after Die Briblichen (1984) and Gauner gegen Gauner (1990) the third and last part about the two corrupt police officers René Boirond and François Lesbuche. The two roles were played in all three films by Philippe Noiret and Thierry Lhermitte. The third part was also filmed in Paris, but this time the police station is not Montmartre but Belleville . René's funeral was filmed in the Père Lachaise cemetery . Florence Sadaune created the costumes, Katia Wyszkop designed the film .
The film was released in French cinemas on December 10, 2003. In Germany the film was released directly on DVD on May 12, 2005.
