Belleville is a district in the east and northeast of Paris .

description

The same name, originally just outside of Paris ( Porte du Temple located), an independent suburb was not until 1860 incorporated and the associated arbitrary determination of the arrondissement and district divided exactly in the center, so that today a place half in the 19th arrondissement is located and the other in 20 . Regardless of this, the earlier church has largely retained its cohesion.

Belleville is one of the typical immigrant quarters of Paris, including larger groups of Maghrebians , Black Africans , Sephardic Jews and Chinese live here . The prevailing multicultural atmosphere stimulates the work of the local great artist scene.

On the hill of Belleville (French: Butte de Belleville ) is the Parc de Belleville , from whose terraces there is a good overview of the panorama of Paris.

Édith Piaf was born on the steps of house 72 on Rue de Belleville in 1915 . There is a plaque commemorating the famous singer.

traffic

The Belleville metro station of the same name on the western edge of the district connects line 2 with line 11 . Other metro stations are Pyrénées and Jourdain .

politics

Belleville is traditionally left-wing politically. The Parti Socialiste , the French Communist Party , the Greens and the Lutte Ouvrière are well represented. The headquarters of the Parti communiste français is located near the Colonel Fabien station between Belleville and La Villette . A cultural center named after Louise Michel , which was co-founded by Lucio Urtubia, is also located in the district . He himself lived in an apartment directly above.
