Madame Rosa is an award-winning 1977 French film directed by Moshé Mizrahi based on the Prix Goncourt- winning novel You Got Life Before You by Romain Gary and Simone Signoret in the title role.

Madame Rosa lives on the sixth floor of an apartment building in the Parisian entertainment district of Pigalle . The former prostitute who as a Jew the Auschwitz concentration camp had survived, taking care of a surrogate mother to the children of other prostitutes. Momo, one from Algeria originating Islamic boy, is the oldest of these children and their favorite. When he asks her about his parents, she only answers evasively.
As she gets older, she takes fewer children under her care, and Momo has to do more for her too. To support his livelihood, he works as a puppeteer in the streets of the neighborhood. Madame Rosa makes the pretty boy promise that he will never prostitute himself or work as a pimp .
Later he befriends Nadine, a film editor , and his father also comes into his life. After Madame Rosa's health deteriorates, Momo has to take care of her because she is afraid of spending the last days of her life in a hospital. He also helps her in the last hours of her life when the tormenting memories of the concentration camp come back.

Awards
The film won at the Oscars in 1978 the Oscar for best foreign language film and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award (LAFCA Award) for Best Foreign Language film . In addition, the film was nominated for the 1978 Golden Globe Award for best foreign language film . The film also received a National Board of Review award for the best foreign films.
Simone Signoret received the César for best leading actress and the David di Donatello for best leading actress, which she shared with Jane Fonda for her portrayal of "Lillian Hellman" in Julia (1977).
In addition, Bernard Evein was nominated for the César for the best production design , Jean-Pierre Ruh for the César for the best sound .
