Moshé Mizrahi (born September 5, 1931 in Alexandria , Egypt , † August 3, 2018 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) was an Israeli film director and screenwriter .

Life

Moshé Mizrahi emigrated to the British Mandate Palestine as a youth , became a member of the Jewish underground movement and later a soldier in the Israeli army . In 1958 he went to France and was assistant director to Jacques Becker, among others . In the early 1970s, Mizrahi returned to Israel and made several films there, initially produced by Menahem Golan . Two films from this period received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, namely Ani Ohev Otach Rosa for 1973 and Das Haus on Third Street for 1974 . After moving to France again, Mizrahi staged his greatest international success with Madame Rosa . The film about a former prostitute who devotedly cares for children living on the margins of society won the 1978 Oscar for best foreign language film .

Mizrahi was married to actress Michal Bat-Adam since 1980 .
