The 20th arrondissement of Paris , the Arrondissement de Ménilmontant , is one of 20 Parisian arrondissements . It was founded in 1860 by the incorporation of the former parishes of Belleville , Ménilmontant and Charonne.

Geographical location

The 20th arrondissement is on the right bank of the Seine . It borders the 11th arrondissement in the west, the 19th arrondissement in the north and the 12th arrondissement in the south .

The arrondissement consists of the following four districts:

• Quartier de Belleville
• Saint-Fargeau district
• Quartier du Père-Lachaise
• Quartier de Charonne

According to the official census of the Parisian districts, these are Quartiers 77 to 80.

Demographic data

According to the 1999 census, 182,952 inhabitants were registered in the 598 hectare 20th arrondissement. This corresponds to a population density of 30,594 inhabitants per km². This means that 8.3% of the Paris population have their main residence in this arrondissement. The 20th arrondissement is traditionally a working-class district, which is reflected in the political preference for left-wing parties and has always been a magnet for immigrants, at the beginning of the 20th century from Italy, Poland and Spain, then from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; thus it also resembles the neighboring 11th and 19th arrondissements.
