history
In this arrondissement one can find the oldest traces of human settlement on the Parisian territory. The excavations in the Bercy district on the left side of an old tributary of the Seine show the remains of a village from the period between the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. Extraordinary archaeological material was found here : dugout canoes made of wood, clay vessels, bows and arrows and tools made of bones and stones.
In administrative terms, the 12th arrondissement was created in 1860 , at the time of the expansion of Paris through the annexation of the neighboring communities:
- from part of the old 8th arrondissement
- from the entire area of the former municipality of Bercy
- from part of the commune of Saint-Mandé (today's Bel-Air and Picpus districts )
Attractions
The 12th arrondissement , a residential area for most of its history and partly outside of Paris until 1860, has relatively few attractions. Most are more recent.
