The Viaduc des Arts (Viaduct of the Arts) is a former railway viaduct near the Place de la Bastille in the 12th arrondissement of Paris .

History of origin

Avenue Daumesnil and railway viaduct during the Seine floods in 1910

The Viaduc des Arts is part of the former railway line from Paris to Vincennes to Marles-en-Brie , which was opened on 22 September. 1859 It began on the former terminal station Gare de la Bastille at the site of today's opera house Opera Bastille . This station was closed on December 14, 1969 and demolished in October 1984.

After the inauguration of the Opéra Bastille on July 13, 1989, the Paris city administration saved a 1.3-kilometer section of the former viaduct east of the new structure from demolition and began renovating the vaults in 1989 . At the same time, the nine-meter-wide track system above the vault was removed.

In 1993, Patrick Berger ( architect ) and the landscape architects Philippe Mathieux and Jacques Vergely began redesigning the railway line into a planted promenade ( French promenade plantée ) . They created a linear open space with plants climbing on arches and pergolas , creating the world's first elevated park path , which was named Coulée verte René-Dumont in 2014 . At the same time, the conversion of the vault into shops began . The 1,300 meter long viaduct consists of a total of 64 vaults and two metal bridges and has several entrances and exits in its course. The shops opened in 1994.

The Viaduc des Arts runs parallel to Avenue Daumesnil (house numbers 1 to 129). It begins at the confluence of Avenue Daumesnil with Rue de Lyon and ends at Rue de Rambouillet. A section of the 4.5-kilometer park hiking trail is located on the vaults. Around fifty shops are now housed in the ten meter high red brick vaults . The rooms are used in particular by restorers, furniture makers, decorators and interior decorators. Near the west end is the Bastille Metro Station on Métro Paris , served by lines 1 , 5 and 8 .
