occupation

Let's hope it is a girl (original title: Speriamo che sia femmina ) is a 1986 Italy incurred feature film directed by Mario Monicelli . In this drama , Monicelli thematizes uncertainty about the future, withdrawal from responsibility and the failure of marriages and romantic relationships, and in the end counters this with a feminist utopia . The film was awarded the David di Donatello in seven categories, including best film, best director and best screenplay, and Nastri d'Argento in six categories, including best director and best screenplay. Among the films visited in Italy in 1986, it ranked 13th with over 400,000 admissions. It was not shown in cinemas in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Andreas Kilb from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung mentioned the film only incidentally in a festival report and described it as a sad example of the decline of Italian cinema, because its "comedic substance is practically talked to death in the ever-changing television dialogues". For the lexicon of international films , it is a "not without charm told, but very lengthy star comedy" that never reaches the "depth of thought" found in works by Ingmar Bergman or Woody Allen on similar topics .

action

Elena Leonardi has separated from her husband Leonardo and moved from Rome to an estate in Tuscany. There she lives with her daughters Franca and Malvina as well as Martina, the daughter of her sister Claudia, who lives in Rome, and her age-related confused uncle Gugo. The housekeeper Fosca and her daughter also take care of the household.

Unexpectedly, Leonardo arrives at Elena and asks her to put a larger sum into a real estate project, which is why he is already in debt. She refuses his wish. On the way back to Rome, Leonardo had a fatal accident in his car. Franca and Malvina blame their mother Elena for the death of their father. Franca falls out with her mother and takes an apartment in Rome with her fiancé. Elena now also wants to move back to Rome and sell the estate. First of all, she takes care of placing her uncle Gugo in a nursing home. Malvina travels ahead to Rome with her aunt Claudia and Martina. Claudia is constantly arguing with her lover there, and Franca's relationship with her fiancé has already cooled off considerably. Eventually all women decide to live on the estate again and take Uncle Gugo back into their home. Franca confesses that she is pregnant, on which it says: "Let's hope it becomes a girl."
