The family pyramid (original title: L'Été prochain ) is a French film drama by Nadine Trintignant from 1985.
action
Jeanne Severin has just given birth to her sixth child when she decides to leave her husband Edouard. He's a good father, but a lousy husband who has one lover after another. The eldest daughter, Dina, also has marital problems. She is married to the writer Paul, who cannot meet her expectations, which is why they constantly quarrel. Dina's younger sister Sidonie is a talented concert pianist who suffers from pathological stage fright before every performance and marries rashly out of frustration.
The family eventually threatens to break up. When Edouard, who now lives alone, suffers a cerebral haemorrhage and is admitted to a hospital on the Côte d'Azur for an operation , the family meets again to help Edouard. Jeanne and the children with their respective spouses rent a nearby country house, where they talk to each other and move closer together again out of solidarity.
background
The family theme played a role not only in the film, but also behind the scenes. Director and screenwriter Nadine Trintignant was married to Jean-Louis Trintignant , one of the main characters in the film, until 1978 . Their daughter Marie Trintignant also played. Also Serge Marquand and Christian Marquand , the brothers of the director, who came as Nadine Marquand to the world, can be seen in supporting roles. Producer Alain Sarde is also the brother of composer Philippe Sarde , who contributed the film music.
The family pyramid premiered on January 9, 1985 in France and was also presented at the Chicago International Film Festival in October 1985 . In Germany , the film was shown for the first time on March 4, 1988 on DFF 1 on television.
Reviews
“A viscous and immature extended family saga that revolves around love, jealousy and the sense of family,” was the lexicon of the international film . Although the film is cast with first-class actors and full of “atmospheric images”, “it is only seldom that a convincing characterization of the people, their actions and motivations succeeds”. The film is mostly "conventionally romantic syrup", Variety said , but the acting is "hearty and engaging".
Other critics were of the opinion that Nadine Trintignant had "written and directed an elegant and emotional French film" with Die Familienpyramid . The performances of the "talented cast" are worth seeing, the finale lifts the mood.
German version
A German dubbed version was created in 1987 in DEFA's studio for dubbing in East Berlin, directed by Dagmar Nawroth .
