William Lubtchansky (born October 26, 1937 in Paris ; † May 4, 2010 ibid) was a French cameraman , a specialist in sensitive portraits of women and unspectacular outsider materials.

Life

Lubtchansky completed his photographic studies at the École Louis-Lumière in 1959 and subsequently worked as an assistant to the cameramen Willy Kurant ( Masculin - Feminin or: The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola , The Creatures ) and Andréas Winding ( His Prisoners ).

Since 1968 he was active as head cameraman, especially directors of the auteur films - above all: Jacques Rivette - engaged the cameraman, who was praised for his sober visual rigor, who was to prove himself to be an ambitious photographer with a keen sense for artistically balanced room arrangements. Both in agonizingly static-looking films with little action (e.g. The Beautiful Troublemaker ), the tension of which is only nourished by a look, a word or a fleeting movement of the protagonists, as well as in large-scale historical dramas (e.g. Johanna, the Virgin ), in which an internalized, contemplative form determines the narrative structure instead of falling into a presentation of action determined by external visual values, Lubtchanskys demonstrated a feeling for capturing the protagonists' inherent constraints, tensions and emotions in images and thus making them visible to the viewer .

In addition to Rivette, William Lubtchansky also worked with other important directors of French art film, including Jean-Luc Godard , François Truffaut and Claude Berri . In the 1970s he also made a name for himself with his pioneering work in video film.

In 1993 he was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival .
