Life

Willy Kurant is the nephew of the German cameraman Curt Courant (1899–1968). During the Second World War he still lived in his native Liège and was forced to move to the country with his sister. He then lived in an orphanage until he was 17. Despite his father, he wanted to study photography afterwards rather than become a cameraman. But when he was working in a film laboratory and attending a small film school in the evenings, he decided to go with the camera. His film career began when he made a documentary in the Belgian Congo in 1954 . He then shot ten commercials for the French ministry of outreach . Thanks to a grant from Pinewood Studios , Kurant was allowed to work as an assistant to cameramen such as Geoffrey Unsworth , Harry Waxman and Jack Hildyard in 1957 . In 1962 he moved to France to intensify his camera studies.

Kurant made his debut in 1966 as a cameraman for long plays with The Creatures and Masculin - Feminin, or: The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola , shot for Agnès Varda and Jean-Luc Godard . Kurant was able to establish himself as a cameraman in the next few years and shot national and international productions, including Cannabis - Angel of Violence , China Moon and Milo - The Earth Has to Wait . For The Sun of Satans , Kurant was nominated for the French César film award in 1988 for Best Cinematography .
