The Straussee is an ice-age channel lake that is located near the town of Strausberg, which is named after it, in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch-Oderland . It is located about 30 km northeast of Berlin in the forest and lake-rich landscape of eastern Barnim and has a water surface of about 136 ha. It is a lime-rich, stratified lake with a relatively large catchment area and a volume of about 16 million m³ .

description

Postgraben inlet: the only surface drainage from the Straussee that flows into the Annafließ (formerly (Rüdersdorfer) Mühlenfließ)

The lake extends from northeast to southwest of about 3.8 km and is up to 340 m wide. The water body reaches a volume of 14.5 million m³ of water and is on average 9.9 m deep. The Straussee drains through the piped Postgraben into the Annafließ (formerly known as the Mühlenfließ ), then into the Herrensee to the Stienitzsee and on to the Kalksee . Its groundwater catchment area is approximately 73 km². After a few meters wide and up to 6 m flat shore region, it drops steeply to over 10 m depth and is 20 m deep at the deepest point (a few meters southwest of the ferry). Due to the thick layer of mud on the bottom, however, the information about the greatest depth varies. Its thermocline begins at a depth of approx. 9 m. For the Straussee there is a reporting obligation in terms of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Approximately in the middle of the lake it is crossed by the electrically operated Ostrich ferry . In addition to the local residents, the lake is mainly used by the population of nearby Berlin for recreational purposes. There is a public swimming pool and several free bathing entrances. There is also the possibility of renting boats and a diving center . Motorboat traffic is not permitted with the exception of the water watch , the fishing operation and the permitted passenger ship.

The lake is relatively rich in fish. You can find pike , pikeperch , eel , crayfish , burbot , various perch and carp . The abundance of fish is exploited by a commercial fisherman and many anglers. Rainbow trout are raised in aquaculture .

The ground on the eastern side of the city is polluted with building rubble and other civilization garbage, however, every year in April, as part of the Strausseepartnership, the bank areas under and over water are cleaned. On the western, wooded bank you will find "seaweed" meadows ( Carex brizoides ).

Straussee can be reached via the BAB 10 (Berliner Ring) exit Berlin-Hellersdorf and then via the B 1/5 in the direction of Müncheberg . Alternatively, you can take the S5 Berlin-Westkreuz to Strausberg Nord and get off at the “Strausberg Stadt” stop.

origin of the name

The shape of the Straussee is reminiscent of a narrow bean. It is therefore assumed that the name of the lake can be traced back to the Slavic strutch ( dt . 'Pod').

Fall in the water level

exposed course of the Straussee in October 2018

A permanent decline in the water level has been observed for several years. In 2011 the level was around 150 cm and is currently (end of October 2018) around 50 cm. In a preliminary study for a feasibility study "Stabilization of the water balance of the Straussee" recommendations for action to stabilize the water level are made.

Probably the decisive reason for the drop in the water level is climate change, but the increased water withdrawal of the waterworks in Spitzmühle, which went into operation in 2014, also has an influence. The report prepared by the companies BGD ECOSAX GmbH , DHI WASY GmbH and scientists from TU Dresden and published in March 2020 speaks of "'a superposition of several influencing factors":

  • The main causes are the decrease in precipitation (especially winter precipitation) and the increase in summer temperatures (increased evaporation in the Straussee area)
  • Further causes are groundwater abstraction and the current land use "

Citizens' initiative to preserve Straussee eV

In view of the more than ten years of continuous decline in the Straussee water level, the citizens' initiative to preserve the Straussee was founded on February 23, 2019 . The association wants to help clarify the causes scientifically, publish the results and endeavor to take appropriate steps to restore the original condition as quickly as possible.

Activities of the citizens' initiative

Demonstration for the preservation of the Straussee on March 20, 2019

As part of the citizens' dialogue “On the matter, Brandenburg” on March 12, 2019 in Strausberg, the association handed over a petition to the Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke .

The citizens' initiative had its first success with the implementation of the demonstration for the preservation of Straussee on March 20, 2019, which is said to have been the largest demonstration in Strausberg since 1989 with 400 to 500 participants.

Another success is the convening of the permanent climate and environment committee of the Strausberg city council ( climate committee ) in summer 2019.

By writing to the authorities, the association tries to clarify facts and raise awareness of the problems of the Strausssee. In addition, the association endeavors to inform the public about the problem and raise awareness through events.

Activities of the Strausberg city council

Due to the overdraft of the approved delivery quantities in 2017 and 2018 by the Strausberg-Erkner Water Association (WSE) in the Spitzmühle waterworks, the Strausberg city council decided on a number of measures in October 2019. Members of the climate committee demand constructive cooperation from the WSE.

In the Committee for Climate and Environment , the Straussee Task Force was set up on June 2, 2020 to accompany the process of implementing measures from the Straussee report and to develop appropriate proposals for action for the committees.

Sinking water levels in other Brandenburg lakes

The association deals with the solution of problems (drop in water level due to water abstraction , climate change and others) that affect other lakes in Brandenburg in addition to the Straussee:
