The Strausseefähre is a cable ferry in Brandenburg . It crosses the Straussee over a length of 370 meters and connects the city center of Strausberg (city side) with the residential area Jenseits des See (forest side).

The ferry is a landmark of Strausberg and is a listed building .

history

The ferry connection has existed since 1894. At first it was operated by hand with a winch, but due to the increasing number of visitors, a larger ship with a petroleum engine and space for 200 passengers was used after a short time . In 1904 the city of Strausberg bought the ferry. In 1913 a new ferry with a petrol engine followed, but the noise and exhaust fumes quickly led to an electric drive being considered.

In 1915 the switch to electrical operation with 170 volts low voltage took place . The ferry is guided by two ropes stretched in the water. It draws its traction current from an open, single-pole overhead contact line . Return is the water of the lake.

The ferry Steffi used today left the shipyard in Marienwerder in 1967. Its motor has an output of 7.5 kilowatts and it can carry up to 100 people. In June 2012, a comprehensive repair of the ferry took place.

Since the Haßmersheim (Neckar) ferry was shut down in September 2014, the Straussee ferry has been the last remaining overhead line ferry in Germany.

The ferry line was interrupted between September 2016 and June 2017. In addition to the regular overhaul of the ferry, the two piers were converted into floating jetties around six meters long to enable barrier-free access regardless of the water level. Due to the falling water level of the Strausssee, safe access was no longer possible before. Around 100,000 euros were invested in the new investors.

business

The ferry is operated by the Strausberger Eisenbahn and runs all year round. During the season there is a half-hourly ferry crossing; up to 100 people can be transported across the lake at the same time. Around 8,000 passengers use the ferry connection every year. The journey time is seven minutes. Furthermore, the Straussee ferry is also integrated into the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association (VBB) as a local public transport system and therefore bears the additional designation Fährlinie 39. However, the regular VBB tariff does not apply on the ferry, but a special in-house tariff of the Strausberger Eisenbahn. Tickets are sold on board.
