Alternating voltages up to 1000  volts and direct voltages up to 1500 volts are referred to as low voltage . The area of low voltage includes low voltage networks ( 230/400 volts ), but also extra-low voltages . Legal regulations for low-voltage systems within the EU are laid down in the Low-Voltage Directive.

Voltage ranges AC DC
High voltage   > 1000 V > 1500 V
Low voltage   ≤ 1000 V ≤ 1500 V
Low voltage ≤ 50 V ≤ 120 V

Higher electrical voltages are referred to as high voltage , which in the field of electrical power engineering is divided into medium voltage , high voltage and maximum voltage . The limit values are not clearly defined here.
