The Story of Marie and Julien (Original Title: Histoire de Marie et Julien ) is a 2003 film by Jacques Rivette .

action

A little more than a year has passed since Marie and Julien first met and have not seen each other since. Now they run into each other one evening in Paris and meet in a café the next day. But Marie does not come to the rendezvous.

Julien lives in a large house outside Paris and repairs giant clockworks there. But not only that; he also blackmailed a certain Madame X because he has documents that prove that Madame X is trading in counterfeit Chinese silk. Marie appears in Julien's house. They fall in love and she moves in with him.

Julien senses that Marie is driven by a strange determination, but he can neither see the cause nor the aim of this determination. She furnishes one of the rooms in the house according to precise ideas.

It is Madame X who recognizes the nature of Mary. Marie is, like Madame X's sister Adrienne, a revenant. She committed suicide six months ago and has been between life and death ever since. Julien refuses to understand Marie's condition. Only when he follows up on traces and stands in the room where Marie took her own life does he realize that it is exactly like the room in his house that Marie furnished.

It comes to a dramatic ending in which Marie performs "the forbidden gesture", a small miracle happens and one can finally hope with the song by Blossom Dearie : "Our Day Will Come".

History of origin

Spring 1975: Rivette plans to shoot four films, all of which are more or less mythical, in quick succession before even the first of them is supposed to be released. He gives the series the title Les Filles du feu (Daughters of Fire) and later Scènes de la vie parallèle (Scenes from the parallel life). The shooting of films 2 and 3 of the series, Duelle and Noroît , can be realized. Then, with Leslie Caron and Albert Finney in the leading roles, filming of Marie et Julien begins . But Rivette had to give up on the third day; He is not physically up to a continuation, he was - as he said in another conversation - "technically KO".

1976: Duelle and Noroît are released in several French cinemas. - There has been no talk of Marie et Julien for more than 25 years.

2002: While preparing the book Trois films fantômes de Jacques Rivette , he comes across the sketchy sequence of the beginning of the film set up by Claire Denis at the time . He decides to finally film the story of Marie and Julien , strictly adhering to the few remaining notes.
