occupation

Angels and Fools is a British feature film by Charles Sturridge based on the novel of the same name by EM Forster . The leading roles are Helena Bonham Carter , Judy Davis , Rupert Graves and Helen Mirren . The film started in England on June 21, 1991 and was released in German cinemas on January 9, 1992.

action

On a trip to Tuscany with her young friend Caroline Abbott , Lilia Herriton falls in love with a much younger Italian and with the country itself, so she decides to stay there. Out of anger, the family of her late husband sends Lilia's brother-in-law and his sister to Italy to prevent an improper marriage. But they are too late. Lilia marries the Italian and becomes pregnant again in due course. When she dies giving birth to the child, the Herritons feel obliged and entitled to travel to Monteriano to take over custody of the baby so that he can grow up as an Englishman.

background

As with rooms with a view , Italy and its inhabitants are portrayed with irresistible charm, to which Caroline Abbott ultimately fell for.

In the novel the story ends tragically, in the film, however, the end with a new scene is positively indicated.

The film is often mistakenly mistaken for a production by James Ivory , because he filmed the Forster novels Rooms with a View , Reunion in Howards End and Maurice .

criticism

"The social and psychological problem of xenophobia as the subject of a literary film adaptation, which, despite dignified equipment and polished dialogues, does not manage to use the current explosiveness of the subject."
