action

The unemployed Sol lives in Cologne - Chorweiler in a typical high-rise estate and is waiting to get started as a rapper . Sol mostly lives in the daytime and hangs out with his friend Hardy instead of looking for work. On his 30th birthday he is shown in front of the door by his mother and moves with his girlfriend Jessica into an apartment two floors below, which creates the initial situation for the series.

characters

  • Sol Berger is 30 years old, unemployed and has achieved little in his life. He plays Playstation , smoking pot and rapping. He's never at a loss for an excuse, but rarely gets away with it.
  • Jessica is Sol's girlfriend. She tries to keep them afloat with several part-time jobs. Among other things, she works in a fast food shop and helps older neighbors. In the last episode of the first season she separates from Sol and from the second season she works as a secretary for Mr. Küppers. She also takes care of her younger sister Lisa and her two-year-old nephew Jeremy, as her father is constantly drunk.
  • Hardy , the son of a prostitute , is Sol's best buddy and owns a pizzeria on the ground floor. He improves his earnings by stolen goods . He grows hemp plants on the skyscraper roof .
  • Madita Berger is the mother of Sol. She often cooks for the young couple. She is also unemployed and trying to find a man online. So she gets to know a policeman who moves in with her.
  • Ronald Meissner is the father of Jessica and Lisa. He's constantly drunk and mortgages Jeremy himself for a beer.
  • Lisa is the 17-year-old sister of Jessica, who fully fulfills the stereotype "Hartz4-brat": she chews gum all the time, speaks in ghetto slang and knows no complicated words. Her dream job is a prostitute.
  • Jeremy is Lisa's son, who couldn't speak his first words until he was two years old. At first, everyone thinks he's Jessica and Lisa's little brother.
  • Mr. Bulut is the pushy Turkish caretaker of the block. He likes to play the tough guy. At home, his German wife, who has converted to Islam , has her pants on, and his son Deniz has little respect for him and steals the cell phones of his classmates.
  • Mr. Küppers is the property manager of the social housing block. He speaks in a Cologne dialect.
  • Hella is Madita's neighbor and friend who makes her living by phone sex.

reception

The reviews were mixed:

“[...] Kitsch is really not 'Blockbustaz', rather poverty pornography with imaginary canned laughter. [...] The concept of casting two non-actors with Eko Fresh and Ferris MC [...] and thus creating the opposite of artificiality does not always work. But also Joyce Ilg as Jessica and Andreas Hoppe as a drinking father struggle with the awkward scripts by Niklas Hoffmann, which leave it at the intrusive alleged amusement. "

- Fabian Wolff : Column for the first episode on Spiegel Online

“The best thing about this over-the-top environment is the insults. [...] Especially in exposing the German civil service, the series develops an undreamt-of love for exaggerating clichés. [...] The series is content with the next cheap joke. She doesn't care about the living conditions shown. "

- Daniel Gerhardt : Column for the first episode on Zeit Online

“'Blockbustaz' offers comedy with lots of slapstick elements. [...] The format is specially tailored to young people, one laugh follows the other. Sols 'this, that' at the end of every second sentence sounds a lot like forced youth slang. In return, Cosima Henman shines as Jessica's sister Lisa with the authentic imitation of an immature problem student from the block. "

- Anna-Lena Schild : Column for the first episode in Stern
