Reviews

  • "TimeOut" wrote that "War in Chinatown" was a commercially oriented, hard, stylized and often "painfully misunderstood" film adaptation of " Romeo and Juliet ". Ferrara makes excellent use of the authentic locations, but is unsure of how to guide the inexperienced actors. The main strength of the script is that it shows three generations. The film is too sentimental.
  • Janet Maslin compared "The War in Chinatown" in The New York Times (September 25, 1987 issue) to the series " Miami Vice ". The film is highly stylized. Ferrara knows nothing else to do with the actors than to let them fight against each other. The virtuosity that is visible in places cannot compensate for the film's "fundamental stupidity".
  • Jonathan Rosenbaum praised the camera work in "Chicago Reader".

Awards

Abel Ferrara was nominated for the Critics' Prize of the Deauville Film Festival in 1987.
