Russell Jan Tak Wong (born March 1, 1963 in Troy , New York ) is an American actor and photographer and the brother of Michael Wong .

biography

Wong was born the sixth of a total of seven children in Troy. He is of Dutch-American descent on the part of his mother and of Chinese descent on the part of his father. When he was a baby, the family moved to Albany , where his father, William Wong, runs a restaurant. His parents divorced at the age of seven and he moved to California with his mother, Connie Van Yserloo . After high school and college, he made his way as a photographer and dancer, appearing in music videos by David Bowie , Janet Jackson and Donna Summer , among others .

At the age of 22 he got his first role in a Hong Kong musical. After his appearance he was seen in a few unimportant TV productions, but it wasn't until his guest role in the youth cult series 21 Jump Street - Tatort Klassenzimmer (1989) that he received significantly better offers. This was followed by the leading role in Wayne Wang's romantic comedy Eat a Bowl of Tea and supporting roles in New Jack City and China Cry . Wong finally made his breakthrough in 1994 with the portrayal of an exiled political activist for the TV production Vanishing Son . He also gained recognition in Europe for the supporting roles in God's Army II - Die Prophezeiung and Romeo Must Die .

He was married to fashion designer Flora Cheong-leen from 2003 to 2012 and has a daughter with dancer Eartha Robinson.
