action

Nick Walker and Bobby Hayes, detectives at the Boston Police Department, steal a chest full of gold fragments they found during a drug raid. Nick buries his share of the gold in his back yard, with the intention of retrieving it later in order to facilitate a better life for himself and his wife Julia. However, he regrets his theft and informs Hayes that he wants to return the gold. Later, during a raid on a warehouse, Nick and Hayes are involved in a shootout with criminals. Hayes shoots Nick to prevent him from returning the gold.

While ascending through a tunnel to the afterlife , Nick is taken to the office of Mildred Proctor, the director of the Boston Division of the Rest In Peace Department (RIPD) , an agency that recruits deceased police officers to go on and afterlife patrols to grasp so-called deados . Deados are ghosts who failed to cross the line to heaven and returned to earth as failed monster ghosts. They look like normal people, but for various reasons they burst from the human shell. Nick agrees to the RIPD join after Proctor explains that the service lasts at least a century to ward off the dangers and he therefore a recommendation for the Last Judgment gets. He then meets his new partner, Roy Pulsipher, a former US marshal who lived in the 19th century.

Nick and Roy return to Earth, where Nick attends his own funeral and sees Hayes hug and comfort his wife. When he tries to get to Julia, Julia does not recognize him. Roy explains to him that they cannot be recognized by the living, but that they can only perceive their avatars and gives Nick a bundle of ID cards with the image of his avatar, an ancient Chinese. Roy's avatar, on the other hand, is an attractive blonde.

After the failed attempt to communicate with Julia, Nick accompanies Roy to the apartment of a deado suspect, Stanley Nawlicki. While questioning the suspect, Nick reads questions from small cards, all of which end with Indian food, while Roy chews on the Indian fast food he has brought with him . The suspect reacts to the Indian and begins to burst out of the body. Nick tries to arrest him, but the undead struggles. Nick rips off his arm during the fight. The undead can escape by jumping out the window of the skyscraper. Nick just looks after him, but Roy rushes him out of the window, following the fleeing man. After Nick vented himself by beating Nawlicki, he found gold pieces that looked exactly like the ones he and his old partner Bobby had stolen. Roy shoots the Deado when Nick attacks.

Nick doesn't let the chunks of gold rest and so he presses Roy until he's ready to meet the Deado Elliot, who works for him as an informant. When they ask Elliot about the gold, he only gives excuses and they decide to tail him. When Elliot leaves the Red Sox Stadium, Bobby Hayes appears, to whom he hands the gold. They are watched by Nick and Roy, who follow Hayes to the house of Nick's wife Julia. There Bobby gets Julia to show him the place where Nick buried the gold. Julia is confused and thinks Nick was corrupt. Roy thinks so too and demands an explanation from Nick.

Bobby Hayes meets Deado Pulaski, whom he hands over the gold in a busy department store. The RIPD duo follows the gold and grabs Pulaski, whom they take with them to a cold room in the department store and try to question him there. Pulaski responds by puffing up and escaping the cold room. After a devastating chase through downtown Boston, Pulaski manages to escape the cops. Proctor is pissed off and suspends them both. She explains to them that the gold fragments are part of a 3,000 year old mystical artifact from the staff of Jericho. This has the power to reverse the direction of the tunnel to heaven, so that the deceased would not get to heaven, but fell back to earth, which would de facto trigger an apocalypse. Nick and Roy then decide to continue the investigation on their own.

The two make their way to Hayes, who already has a clue who they are. It turns out that this one is also a deado. He is arrested and taken to RIPD headquarters. With the help of an artifact that paralyzes the cops, Hayes and the other undead monsters manage to steal all the missing parts of the staff and return to earth. There they begin to assemble the artifact on the roof of the Commonwealth Building.

While the Deados are assembling the staff of Jericho, Hayes has Julia kidnapped and taken to the Commonwealth Building, where he needs her as a human sacrifice to open the portal. After a wild ride and a fight against the Deados, Nick and Roy arrive on the roof of the building. When Hayes injures Julia and she is bleeding, the blood gets inside the wand and the portal begins to open.

After fighting the Deados, Nick manages to kill Hayes and get to Julia while Roy destroys the portal. Severely injured and shortly before death, Julia comes to the hospital, where she is reanimated by Proctor in the form of a doctor. Despite everything, Nick is punished with a warning, Roy with a 53-year extension of service, which is now his third. Nick, who was not satisfied with his old avatar, receives a new one from Roy in the form of a young girl scout with large glasses and braces.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews and the box office results also fell far short of expectations.

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has a rating of only eleven percent: only 7 of the 61 rated reviews were positive, on average, critics gave the film 3.4 out of 10 possible points. To sum up, the tenor is: The film may have a few moments - mostly thanks to Jeff Bridges' portrayal of an undead Wild West sheriff - but RIPD is ultimately too stupid and formulaic to entertain.

“As the saying goes - well stolen is better than badly homemade! For the makers of "RIPD 3D" we have to come up with a new proverb - because they have adopted the recipe for success from "Men in Black" almost one-to-one, but then almost completely ruined their film . "

- Christoph Petersen : film starts

“RIPD is fun and has some wonderful scenes to offer. In terms of content, however, one searches in vain for a fascinating story that surprises. It runs on safe rails right from the start. And the "bad guy" was identified after a few minutes. There is certainly potential for a continuation. After all, Men in Black also had more than one part ... "

Gross profit

As of September 4, 2013, RIPD had grossed $ 33.1 million in the United States and an additional $ 31.6 million worldwide, bringing the gross revenue to a total of $ 64.7 million. Since the film grossed less than ten percent of its 130 million budget on the opening weekend, it is considered a flop at the box office.
