action

After the citizens of Chicago learn the truth about the faction system, Evelyn has the gate to the outside world locked. The non-attached conduct show trials of Jeanine's followers, which end with their execution. Johanna does not agree with Evelyn's actions and takes on her with her amites. Caleb's trial is scheduled for the next day. Four and Tris free Caleb from his cell. Together with Christina, Peter and Tori they break up to the fence. They are followed by Edgar and some followers. They all make it over the fence except for Tori, who is shot by Edgar.

In the world behind the fence they end up in the fringing desert, which is radioactively contaminated by the war. Edgar continues to pursue the fugitives, but armed men appear from the opening of a camouflage barrier, led by Matthew, who receive them and bring them to the "Office for Genetic Social Services". In the ultra-modern city hidden behind the camouflage barrier, they will be decontaminated and learned that in the past humans were genetically manipulated to solve nutritional and social problems, resulting in a world war that nearly wiped out humanity. Now Chicago is part of an experiment that aims to naturally clean up the “defective” human genome . This experiment is strictly monitored by the "office". Tris is brought to David, the head of the "office". He explains that Tris is the first person to be genetically pure and that all other Chicago residents are defective, including Four. David wants to find out why Tris is clean and then wants to inform the council in the neighboring city of Providence, which makes all decisions. David enables Tris to see her mother's memories. She learns that her mother grew up in "Office" and volunteered to join the Chicago experiment. Because of this information, Tris trusts David. Meanwhile, Four and Christina are assigned to Nita, who prepares them for assignments in the peripheral desert to save children there. Caleb and Peter are assigned to the surveillance service overseeing the events in Chicago.

In Chicago Evelyn is preparing for Johanna's group, which is now called "The Faithful". Evelyn has Johanna's followers killed, whereupon she declares war on her. Tris asks David to stop the Civil War in Chicago, but he pretends that he can only intervene with the approval of the council. Four and Christina set out with some soldiers to a settlement in the fringing desert to save children. Both state that this is not a bailout. David repeatedly has children kidnapped from villages on the outskirts and erased their memories with a fake vaccination in order to let them grow up in "office". Four reports this to Tris and tries to convince her to return to Chicago. However, Tris trusts David's good intentions and decides to fly with him to the council in Providence. David allegedly lets Four of Matthew and some soldiers fly to Chicago, but Matthew warns him that he should be killed on the flight. Four incapacitates the soldiers and crashes the ship on the fringes. He leaves Matthew with a hidden clue for Tris and makes his way to Chicago, where he can overcome the camouflage barrier with a code card from Matthew.

In Providence, David reports Tris to the council, which Tris then questions. She learns that David could intervene in Chicago without the approval of the council. Tris is appalled by David's lie. Back in “office” David makes a deal with Peter. He is supposed to convince Evelyn in Chicago to use a serum that erases the memory of her opponents and thus restores peace. In return, he offers Peter a career advancement. Meanwhile, Matthew delivers Tris the hidden message from Four that finally convinces her of David's betrayal. She learns from Caleb, who is closely monitoring what is going on in Chicago, that Four is being held by Evelyn and that Peter has given her a sample of the serum. Evelyn successfully tests the serum on Marcus. She initially struggles to use it across the board against the "loyal ones", but Peter can finally convince her. Tris realizes that David wants to erase not only the memory of the "loyal ones", but of everyone in Chicago in order to reintroduce the factions and start the experiment from the beginning. She decides to leave for Chicago. Caleb and Christina join her. With Nita's help, they steal David's ship, which is the only one able to fly through the camouflage barrier. After a chase with David's soldiers, they land in Chicago unnoticed.

Meanwhile, Evelyn begins releasing the gaseous serum through the ventilation system across Chicago. While Caleb seeks a way to stop this, Tris and Christina penetrate to Four's prison cell and free him. They advance to the room in which Peter and Evelyn control the release of the serum, but it is sealed. When Four convinces his mother to stop the process, Peter shoots Evelyn down. However, the gas also penetrates his room, so that at Tris' urging he opens the door in panic, but she too cannot stop the release. Caleb discovers that a certain throttle valve has to be destroyed, which Tris finally manages, despite David's angry protests. The gas flow stops and the gas that has escaped evaporates.

Eventually, Tris gives a speech to the people of Chicago by clearing up the citizens of the truth that is behind the fence. Tris explains to David the resistance in Chicago. Caleb prepares David's ship with a bomb load and programs it so that it destroys the cloaking barrier when it flies through. When the group now has a clear view of the “office”, they are observed by David via remote monitoring.

production

Production preparation

In December 2013 Lionsgate announced that the third part of the book series The Determination - Final Decision would be filmed for March 2016. Almost half a year later it became known that the novel would be split into two films, with the first part planned for 2016 and the second part in 2017. Robert Schwentke takes over the direction of the third and fourth parts again. Noah Oppenheim was hired as a screenwriter. On September 10, 2015, Lionsgate announced that the films were getting a new title. The first part was simply shortened in the original to The Divergent Series: Allegiant , while the second part was renamed The Divergent Series: Ascendant .

Casting

Most of the actors from The Determination - Insurgent can also be seen in the third part. Shailene Woodley , Theo James , Ansel Elgort , Octavia Spencer , Ray Stevenson , Zoë Kravitz , Miles Teller , Maggie Q , Naomi Watts and Keiynan Lonsdale are revisiting their roles from the previous films. One of the first new roles went to Jeff Daniels on April 28, 2015 , who will take on the role of David , out-of-town director. A short time later, Bill Skarsgård was cast for another new role. The German actress Nadia Hilker was cast for the role of Juanita "Nita" .

Filming

Filming began in Atlanta , Georgia on May 21, 2015 and ended on August 23, 2015.

marketing

A first teaser trailer was released on September 15, 2015, which contains scenes from the two previous films. The first official trailer was released on November 12, 2015 in the USA and four days later in Germany. A film and character posters were released one day after the trailer was released.

continuation

The theatrical release for the sequel The Determination - Ascendant was originally scheduled for March 24, 2017 in the USA, but after the low public success of the third part, the production company announced in July 2016 that Ascendant was expected to be a TV rather than a theatrical film. Film is released. However, since Shailene Woodley (the leading actress) did not renew her contract, a release on the scheduled date could not be kept.

The TV broadcaster Starz , which belongs to Lionsgate , was working on a TV series based on the film series. The script was written by Adam Cozad and directed by Lee Toland Krieger . Both were already scheduled for the film, which did not come to light. In December 2018, the broadcaster announced that the plans for the television series had been canceled. The reasons given were the lack of interest on the part of actors and broadcasters. Thus the film series ended with the open end in the third part.
