action

Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Peter and Marcus reach the Amite faction, where they meet several survivors of the Altruan faction. The Amite declare their headquarters to be a peace zone in which members of all factions can find safe refuge.

The peace only lasted for a short time, however, and members of the Ferox and Ken soon reached the camp to look for the Altruan who had fled. But Tris, Tobias and Caleb escape and flee by train, where they meet non-attached people. These are surprisingly organized and have several buildings; In one of them the friends meet the leader of the non-attached Evelyn - Tobias' mother. She asks Tobias to convince the Ferox to join the non-attached.

Shortly afterwards Caleb leaves the camp, while Tris and Tobias make their way to the headquarters of the Candor. Before they even get there, they are arrested in order to make a statement under the truth serum. Tobias confesses that he left the Altruan to escape his father, Tris confesses that she had to shoot her friend Will.

The Candor are soon attacked by some Ferox, led by Eric. They are then implanted with a new serum, which again does not work with the undetermined. The serum ensures that Jeanine can have control over all members without time restrictions.

In a secret meeting, the remaining Ferox elect new leaders, one of whom is Tobias. In the end, he has enough influence to convince the Ferox to join the non-attached, as his mother wanted.

During the night, the newly implanted serum shows its effect for the first time - several Ferox fall from the roof to their deaths. Tris feels guilty because Jeanine had asked to hand over the indefinite, and so she goes to see the Ken.

There she negotiates with Jeanine to undergo medical tests as long as she is allowed to know the results. There she also meets her brother Caleb again, who has now apparently betrayed Tris and the other friends and works for Jeanine.

One evening Tris meets Tobias, who asks her to wait a little longer for her to be saved and to hold out. Jeanine injects Tris with a serum; But when this doesn't work and Tris laughs at the Ken's inability to control her, Jeanine decides to have her killed the next day.

Through a skillful manipulation of the death serum and the EKG by Peter, who has the feeling to be in debt to Tris for saving his life, Tris survives and is able to escape.

In her old Altruan neighborhood, she meets Tobias' father, Marcus, who convinces her that her parents did not die without reason, but that they tried to save certain information that had been stolen from Jeanine. He wants to publish this information and Tris decides to help him.

Together with some others, they make their way to the Ken. After some fighting and another meeting with Caleb, Marcus and Tris decide to go to Jeanine's private laboratory to find the information. There she actually meets Jeanine again, but she is already attacked by Tori. She wants to take revenge for the death of her brother, also an undetermined one, and finally kills Jeanine, without Tris being able to give any information.

Tris is arrested by Tori and nobody believes that the information from Jeanine exists. It turns out that the non-attached, led by Evelyn, had their own plan from the start. She proclaims that there will be a non-attached future with a new government.

Shortly afterwards it turns out that Tobias was apparently able to save the information. A video is played in which a woman, Amanda Ritter, who then takes the name Edith Prior, speaks about corruption and the formation of political groups. The city was located away from the rest of the world so that a new morality and peace could develop. The Amite were also charged with opening the gates to the outside forever as soon as enough indefinite appeared to reunite Chicago society with that of the rest of the world.

continuation

In the third volume of the novel series, The Determination - Final Decision (original title: Allegiant ), the plot is continued directly. The novel was published in the USA in 2013 and in Germany in March 2014. In this part, Tris and Tobias (Four) explore the world outside the fence.
