The determination (original title: Divergent ) is the first volume of the three-part series of Die-Determination novels by Veronica Roth .

action

After the last great war, the citizens of Chicago live in a society that is divided into five factions. Each is responsible for upholding a particular virtue of humanity and eradicating some of human weaknesses: Altruan (the selfless), Ferox (the fearless), Ken (the learned), Candor (the bold ones) and Amite (the kind and peaceful) . However, there are also non-attached who live on the poverty line and are cared for by the Altruan. They do not belong to a parliamentary group because they did not manage to join a parliamentary group or because they could not fully complete the initiation into a parliamentary group. On a specific day of the year, all 16 year olds are required to take an aptitude test that will tell them which faction they are best suited for. After receiving the results, they have to decide whether to stay with their family or whether to go to another faction. In doing so, they should choose the most suitable group for themselves, regardless of their family and the result of their aptitude test. If you choose another faction, you will in principle no longer belong to your family, as a very important rule is called "faction before blood".

These 16-year-olds include Beatrice Prior and her brother Caleb, who grew up with the Altruan. Beatrice realizes that she cannot be selfless and feels lonely and constricted by her surroundings, in contrast to her brother Caleb, who is always selfless. During the aptitude test, it is found that her results are inconclusive: not only does she fit into one parliamentary group, but her behavior suggests several groups. She learns from her examiner Tori, who is a Ferox, that she is an indeterminate, and is warned that she must not talk to anyone about her results. Beatrice is then nervous and does not want to end up as a non-attached party.

On the day of the decision, Caleb decides for the Ken, which shocked Beatrice because she did not expect this from her brother. She also decides against her family and goes to the Ferox. In her new faction, she befriends Christina, Al and Will, who are also new. Beatrice only calls herself Tris there because a new life is beginning for her. But she also meets Peter, a former Candor, who makes her life hell, because he believes that an Altruan cannot be fearless. She also learns that all newcomers have to go through an initiation process before they are considered full members of the Ferox. At the end of the initiation they have to end up in the top ten, otherwise they will be fired and non-attached.

Initiation is divided into three phases: The first involves fighting and handling weapons. Tris, who is the weakest at first, becomes sixth at the end of the first phase. First placed Edward is injured by second placed Peter and leaves the Ferox. On visitor day, Tris is visited by her mother Natalie, who has already suspected that Tris is an indefinite woman. At the same time, articles were published in newspapers insulting the Altruan. For example, their leader, Marcus, is accused of abuse. Although Tris “fraction before blood” applies, the allegations sound unbearable.

In the second stage, the initiators have to face their various fears in simulations similar to aptitude tests. As an indeterminate, Tris is the only one who can control the simulations, which makes it number one. She is therefore attacked by Peter, Drew and Al, but saved by Four. Al, who would actually have a special bond with Tris, comes to Tris the next day and asks her forgiveness, as they are actually friends. But Tris does not accept the apology. The next day, Al is found at the foot of a cliff; he probably couldn't take it anymore and was plagued with guilt. Tori, the Ferox who carried out the aptitude test on Tris, warns her again to be vigilant as the faction leaders want to kill everyone indefinitely because they believe they could endanger the system. One evening, Tris overhears a conversation between the leader of the Ferox, Eric, and the leader of the Ken, Jeanine, who also harbored the allegations against the Altruan. These talk about renegade indeterminates and their elimination. A little later, she illegally visits her brother Caleb, who says that all of Ken were acting very strangely and that something big was going on. She tells this to Four, who learned that Tris is indefinite. Four believes the Ken are planning a war against the Altruan and that the Ferox will be used as warriors.

After the third and final phase, all Ferox members are injected with a serum allegedly indicating the whereabouts of a member. In the fear landscape phase, Tris has to face her own seven fears. She is the first to finish her initiation. At the victory celebration, Tris suddenly becomes aware of how the Ken want to get the Ferox to fight the Altruan: through the serum.

The plan is carried out at night. The serum induces a simulation and all Ferox members become soldiers under the control of the Ken. They march into the Altruan faction and start killing. Only Tris and Four are still conscious as both are indefinite. However, they are captured by Jeanine, who has developed a new serum that is much stronger and is effective even on the uncertain. With that she gets Four under control. This then transforms and is also remotely controlled. Tris is about to be drowned. When her mother saves her, the Ferox kill her while fleeing. Tris finds shelter with Marcus, her father Andrew and her brother Caleb. Together they make their way to Ferox headquarters. There she can free Four from the simulation. This ends the entire simulation and all Ferox members suddenly realize what they have done. With a heavy heart, Tris leaves her dead father behind and sets off with Four, Caleb, Marcus and the captured Peter on the way to the Amite.

Factions
