Memorial stone for the desert of Sörßen

Sörßen is a deserted settlement in the Middle Ages , of which no visible remains have been preserved. The former settlement is located between Sehnde and Rethmar in Lower Saxony .

Sörßen was first mentioned as a Sottessen in a fief register in 1360 . The settlement was in a damp lowland in which the Danube brook flows. This location gave its name, as Sörßen goes back to the old Low German word sör for sour and swampy.

It is believed that Sörßen became a desert in the 15th century. In 1578 the settlement is described as a desert field mark .

In 2012 , the Sehnde branch of the Lower Saxony Heimatbund set up a boulder as a memorial stone in memory of Sörßen . The few hundred meters west of the Wüstungsstelle erected on a hill with the field names Sörßenberg boulder ( 52 ° 18 '39.2 "  N , 9 ° 59' 1"  O ) marked: "Sörßen first mentioned in 1360". An information board is attached to the stone.
