Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (Original title: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) is an American animated series based on the comics of the same name by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird .

Emergence

The popularity of the comic book in the late 1980s led television stations to offer the Turtles inventors Eastman and Laird to produce an animated series based on their characters. Eastman and Laird agreed, but did not know how many compromises they would have to make before the series aired. The atmosphere of the adult comic, in which blood flowed and cursed, was prepared in a child-friendly manner and was more colorful and harmless than the inventors had imagined. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of it, the series was a great success. When the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should also be included in the television program in the UK, the word Ninja by Hero (f. Engl. Hero ) replaced because it was felt that the word Ninja do not fit in a children's program. As a result, all Turtles merchandising for Great Britain and (presumably) the rest of Europe had to be renamed. Another consequence of local British law was that Michelangelo's nunchaku , his weapon, was removed and later replaced with another weapon (a rope with a throwing anchor) after it was never used.

content

The series is about four mutant turtles who live in New York's sewers . The four turtles are taught the Far Eastern martial art of ninjutsu by Hamato Yoshi, who has mutated into a rat and now calls himself Splinter . Splinter plays a kind of father figure. The only uncovered contact with the surface is with a television reporter named April O'Neil, and later with her colleague Irma and a man named Casey Jones. The four turtles prefer to eat pizza. Each of the four main characters has a certain character trait. Leonardo is the leader, Donatello the thinker, Raphael the daredevil and Michelangelo the comedian. The Turtles are further distinguished by the color of the headbands (in the original comics, however, all Turtles wore red headbands), the green tone of their skin colors and their weapons. Leonardo wears a blue headband and fights with two katana , Donatello wears purple and defends himself with a (baton), Raphael is characterized by his red headband and his sai , Michelangelo wears orange and uses nunchaku , or from season 4 a grappling hook . What they all have in common is their characteristic battle cry “Cowabunga!” .

The opponents of the Turtles are Oroku Saki, a former student of Yoshis, who now calls himself Shredder , and Krang , an alien from Dimension X. The two are supported by the foot soldiers , robot versions of the Foot clan from the Yoshi and Saki, as well as Bebop and Rocksteady , two street thugs Shredder has mutated into a rhinoceros (Rocksteady) and a warthog (Bebop). Again and again other, mostly mutated opponents appear.

Other occasional adversaries of the Turtles include Baxter Stockman , a brilliant scientist and inventor of the Pied Piper Robot, who was turned into a fly mutant by Krang, the Rat King , a person living in the sewer who can talk to the rats and keep them under He has control, Leatherhead , a mutated alligator from Florida, Slash, the mutated house snapping turtle from Bebop and Rocksteady, and Tempestra, a video game character who has come to life and wants to destroy the world.

In the last three seasons of the series, drastic changes were made: the sky turned red, the Turtles only fought crime at night and Shredder was replaced as the Turtles' archenemy by Lord Dregg .

Characters

  • Leonardo (Blue Bandana ): Fights with two katana swords and is the leader of the four Turtles.
  • Donatello (Violet Bandana): Fights with the Bō and is the most intelligent of his brothers.
  • Raphael (Red Bandana): Fights with two Sai and is never at a loss for a spell.
  • Michelangelo (Orange Bandana): Fights with two nunchaku and from the fourth season a grappling hook .
  • Splinter : The Turtles' sensei who teaches them the martial art of ninjutsu. He was originally human but was turned into a rat by Shredder.
  • April O'Neil : A redheaded Channel 6 television reporter and the Turtles' contact to the overworld.
  • The neutrinos Dask, Kala and Zak : teenagers from dimension X, whom the Turtles occasionally stand by in their fight against Krang's warriors.
  • Shredder : archenemy of the Turtles and leader of the Foot clan. Before traveling to America from Japan, he was known as Oroku Saki.
  • Krang : The highly intelligent ruler of dimension X, who ekes out his existence as a disembodied brain.
  • Bebop and Rocksteady : Shredder's minions, who were originally humans, but were turned into warthog and rhinoceros by him.
  • Shredder's Villain Gallery :
    • The Rat King : An unknown warrior who lives in the New York City sewers with his rat army.
    • Leather Head: A mutant Florida alligator and bounty hunter.
    • Slash : Bebop and Rocksteady's house turtle, which was originally supposed to do their housework, but has decided to destroy New York.
    • Tempestra : A video game character come to life who can control the weather.
    • Chromdom : Shredder's self-made, (almost) indestructible Android warrior .
  • Baxter Stockman : An inventor and henchman from Shredder who built the pied piper robot before it was turned into a fly. Unlike all the other versions in the franchise, he is not portrayed here as an African-American , but as a white man.
  • General Traag : Krang's right-hand man from Dimension X and leader of the stone soldiers.
  • CHAOS : A troop of mutants from the future who want to turn humanity into mutants. Their leader is Titanus .
  • Lord Dregg : A warlord from space who has set himself the goal of conquering earth and destroying the Turtles.

Other adaptations

Due to the series' continued popularity in Japan , an OVA series was produced in 1996 and 1997 to promote a new line of toys. From this series called Mutant Turtles: Chōjin Densetsu-hen only two episodes were completed, although the plot included the possibility of a sequel. Although this series used the 1987 designs of most of the main characters (with the exception of the Shredder), the plot is completely independent of its American model and mixes the general design with elements of the anime .

In 2009 , on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 4kids Entertainment produced the television film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles Forever in collaboration with Mirage Studios , which is a crossover between the Hero Turtles, the original Mirage Comic Turtles and the new ones Turtles is. In the plot of the original series he can be set during the first seven seasons, as the Technodrome is still on earth, the Kanal 6 building is still in New York and Lord Dregg or Titanus, the villains in seasons eight to ten, are nowhere to be seen or even mentioned.

DVD publications

The German DVDs are distributed by KSM. First the episodes 170 to 193 were released on five single DVDs, later in a slipcase, without the uncut US version. The first 25 episodes followed later in a new box, including the uncut US version.

After the success of the new DVD box, KSM announced two more DVD boxes for the series.

After the first three boxes with the first 80 episodes of the series had already been published, KSM has announced that the remaining episodes of the series will be published in further box sets. In addition, a new edition of Box 1 will be published on September 19, 2011 with fewer discs than the first edition.

Trivia

  • The Technodrom, the mobile base of Shredder and Krang, changes its position almost every season:
  • In the first season, it is located under New York City.
  • In season two, it's in Dimension X, Krang's home dimension.
  • In the third season, the Technodrom is stranded on the earth's core without energy.
  • In the fourth season and the "Europe Sideseason", the Technodrom is heavily damaged on an asteroid in dimension X.
  • In season five, it's stuck in the ice at the North Pole.
  • In the sixth and seventh seasons, it is at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.
  • In season eight, the Technodrome is in Dimension X, while Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady are stranded on earth.
  • In the ninth and most of the tenth season you can't see or hear anything from the Technodrom. Only in the last episode Donatello and Michelangelo get Krang's android bodies from the abandoned Technodrom, which is now inhabited by various mutants in Dimension X.
  • At the end of season 7, when the Technodrome is pulled into Dimension X, Krang flees from the Turtles in his Android body. At the beginning of the eighth season, however, he has his "bubble walker", which should actually be in the lost Technodrom, but no longer his android body.
  • From the eighth season, the series has been completely revised. The whole setting is now a lot more serious, the Turtles only roam New York City at night. Shredder was also replaced by Lord Dregg at the end of the eighth season as the archenemy of the Turtles. Only in the tenth season does he return in 3 episodes together with Krang.
  • The fate of bebop and rocksteady was never resolved in the series. They disappeared from one season to the other.
