Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (known in Europe as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles ) is a side-scrolling beat 'em up that was first released as an arcade game by Konami in 1989 and is based on the first animated series that started in 1987. The slot machine game was sold in two versions at the time - a standardized two-player version and a deluxe four-player version. From 1990 porting to various home consoles followed , including for the NES as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game and the home computers Amiga , Atari ST , C64 , CPC , ZX and DOS as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles: The Coin-Op! .

A slightly modified version of the arcade game could be unlocked as a bonus in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus from 2004. In 2007 Ubisoft also released a version for Xbox Live Arcade under the title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1989: Classic Arcade .

story

April O'Neil , the television reporter and friend of the Turtles, is kidnapped by Shredder and his two henchmen Rocksteady and Bebop . The four Turtles Leonardo , Donatello , Raphael and Michelangelo immediately set off to free them. They must fight their way through hordes of Foot-loss and arch-enemies, including the mad scientist Baxter Stockman , the Alien - brain Krang and finally shredder . Even The plot carries the Turtles from New York City to Dimension X , where they where Face kidnappers in the Technodrome .

Gameplay

Up to four players (two in the home versions) choose one of the four Turtles as a character. While Raphael and Michelangelo carry out quick attacks at close range, Donatello has a longer range with slower attacks and Leonardo has a balanced mean of speed and area of effect.

Game board of the arcade game

The scope of control includes the joystick to move in eight directions, one button performs a jump and another lets the character attack with his weapon. It is also possible to carry out special actions using certain key combinations. In this way, opponents can be thrown upside down and a special attack can be carried out by pressing both buttons. As a result, Raphael slides across the floor to his opponent, followed by a kick, while the three remaining Turtles make a long-range jump attack. In some areas or level sections it is also possible to climb ladders and walls.

Opponents can be defeated faster by throwing them against walls or solid objects and items. You can interact with many level objects such as hydrants , traffic cones , parking meters or oil barrels and, among other things, trigger explosions that capture several opponents. The standard opponents include the foot soldiers , who - depending on the weapon they are carrying - wear different colors. The opponents dressed in purple are able to hold the player from behind, thereby draining life energy and making them more accessible for attacks by other opponents. The end bosses of the game include Rocksteady and Bebop , Baxter Stockman , Lieutenant Granitor , General Traag , Tora and Shogun (only in the NES version), Krang and finally Shredder .

The attract mode of the arcade version showed part of the cartoon opening sequence and was accompanied by the theme song of the same series.

Level environments

  • Scene 1: Fire! We gotta get April out !!

The game starts in a burning skyscraper , where the Turtles are trying to save April from her apartment . Rocksteady is the final boss of this level.

  • Scene 2: C'mon after that Shredder Creep !!

This level consists of two game sections. On the streets of New York, the player fights his way to Bebop , the first boss of the level, and then ends up in the sewers . At the end of this, Baxter Stockman , the second boss, waits in a flying ship.

  • Scene 3: Let's melt Snow and rebuild NY City ( NES- exclusive level)

The first part of this stage consists of a snow field, which is only present in the NES version. The final boss Torah was implemented for this. The second section forms the actual third level of the arcade version. At the end of the day, the player takes on Rocksteady and Bebop in a parking lot together (replaced by Baxter Stockman's mutated fly form in the NES version).

  • Scene 4: Let's get to that Secret Factory !!

  • Scene 6: Let's defeat the Enemy's Ninja Magic !! (NES exclusive level)

An elevator leads from the factory to a high dojo . The bounty hunter Shogun from Dimension X , hired by Shredder , takes the place of the final boss at the end of this level.

  • Scene 7: We gotta find the Technodrome !!

The last level starts in Shredder's base, the Technodrome , and includes a total of three bosses. First, the Rock Soldier General Traag stands in the way of the Turtles. Immediately after the victory there is a fight against Super Krang and finally against Shredder . As a result, the Technodrome explodes and the Turtles return home.

So at the end of the third level you no longer fight against the duo consisting of Rocksteady and Bebop , but against the mutated fly form of Baxter Stockman .
