action

The film begins with the speech of an old master to his students and sons with him in the sewers of New York City life and which he employs for a fight against the Foot Clan, a criminal organization that the lives of the people in the city threatened over them. But he does not yet have them ready to rise to the surface and take up the fight against evil. April O'Neil, a young aspiring reporter at Channel 6 who only gets tasks from the everyday life of New Yorkers, is working on a big story that should bring her a breakthrough: She spies on the activities of the Foot Clan , but from Most of her colleagues, especially her boss Bernadette Thompson, do not receive any support. Only her cameraman, Vern Fenwick, tries to improve her morally, but only because he has an eye on his attractive colleague.

April receives evidence of the theft of chemicals by the Foot Clan . At a container terminal she witnesses another robbery by the clan. While she tries to take pictures with the camera of her smartphone , the robbers are attacked by an unknown enemy who throws containers weighing tons through the air like toys. As the clan withdraws, April catches a glimpse of a strange chunky figure, but he disappears before she can snap a picture of her. Only a Japanese character , which was painted on the side of the container, remains as evidence. As the Foot Clan's activities escalate, multi-industrial Eric Sacks promises to end the crisis. It turns out that April's father once worked for him as part of his science team, but is at Sacks Group Ltd. during a Foot Clan raid on his laboratory . lost his life. April had often visited her father in the laboratory as a child and had chosen four turtles and a laboratory rat, whom she had named Leonardo , Michelangelo , Donatello , Raphael, and Splinter , as her pets.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Foot Clan, Shredder , is dissatisfied with his field leader Karai, as she and her soldiers are unable to deal with the mysterious “Avenger” who has recently been hampering their operations. As a result, Karai decides to take a subway station full of people hostage in order to lure her opponent from the reserve. April happens to be in the area and is captured by the Foot Clan while trying to sneak up closer. Before Karai can execute them as the first hostage, not one, but several avengers appear and, protected by the weak flickering light, incapacitate almost the entire Foot group before they retreat to the surface through a rubble chute. On the spur of the moment, April follows the rescuers to the roof of a house and, to their disbelief, discovers that they are four mutated, humanoid turtles . The flash on her smartphone reveals her when April tries to take a photo of evidence. The mutants pose for her and demand the camera from her. April passes out momentarily, giving the mutants time to delete the recording from her phone and find out her name and address. While they then withdraw, April manages to take another, albeit blurred, picture of them. At the sound of their names, she remembered long-lost memories from the Sacks Group's laboratory . In her father's old working papers, she discovers evidence that these “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” are the result of her father's work.

April tries to convince her boss of her story, but is fired instead because of the scant evidence and inadequate explanations. She has her cameraman Vern drive her to Sacks' property, where she asks him about the work her father did for him and shows him the photo of the Turtles. Sacks then tells her that her father was involved in the creation of a miracle cure that formed the basis of the mutagen that made the turtles their current shape. Delighted that the rest of the mutagen in the Turtles' bodies could have survived the fire, Sacks April promises his support. In reality, however, he is in cahoots with Shredder, his teacher, and intends to take control of New York. To this end, he hailed a camouflaged tracking device on April and informed his master of the news that will now make her plan feasible.

Meanwhile, the Turtles return to their home in the sewers, where they are received by Master Splinter. He is indignant that they have come to the surface despite being banned. When he learns of the action in the subway station and of April, he instructs his sons to bring the young woman to him. Splinter, in April's presence, recalls the events that led him and the Turtles to their existence in the sewers: after they were injected with the mutagen, April's father Sack discovered his criminal plans and tried to conduct all research through a fire to destroy. He was murdered by Sacks in revenge. April, who was in the laboratory at the time, rescued her beloved pets from the fire, after which they retreated into the sewers. Over time, however, the mutagen changed their bodies and increased their intelligence . Sensing that the world would not react well to their existence, Splinter made the decision to keep his family underground. So that they can protect themselves from possible dangers, Splinter taught his foster sons the art of ninjutsu , which he had taught himself from a textbook that ended up in the sewer system.

Meanwhile, following the signal from April's tracking device, the Shredder and the Foot Clan break into the mutants' hideout. A fierce battle ensues between the Turtles and the Foot Clan, with Raphael being buried in a collapsing ceiling. Splinter will shredder, which in a high-tech - Armor infected, attacked and seriously injured; Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo are captured and the mutants' hiding place is blown up. April and Raphael are able to rescue the seriously injured Splinter from the ruins of the hiding place, but he urges them to come to the aid of his brothers. After recruiting Vern as a driver, they trace the others back to Sacks' estate.

In the property's underground laboratory, the sure-fire sack reveals his plan to the captured Turtles: the mutagen in their blood was originally intended as an antidote for a chemical weapon that shredders and sacks want to unleash on New York City to prevent an artificial plague trigger. With the mutagen, Sacks would then present the saving antidote to the people of the city and thus gain money and influence in order to be able to rule the city together with the shredder. In order to re-synthesize the mutagen, Sacks wants to suck off their blood down to the last drop and then bring it to New York, where the final phase of the plan is being prepared. Meanwhile, Raphael, April and Vern arrive at the property and fight their way to the laboratory. Raphael fights the Shredder and is defeated before his opponent withdraws. April frees the captured turtles. Together, the six friends pursue Sacks, who has already left for New York with a blood sample. After a breakneck chase, the Turtles arrive at the Sacks Group building, where they split up with April and Vern to stop Shredder, while April and Vern are supposed to recover the mutagen. In the building's laboratory, the two met Sacks and were able to snatch the substance from him. Vern is injured in the process, so April has to come to the aid of the Turtles alone.

Meanwhile, the Turtles confront their enemy on the roof of the building, but are hopelessly inferior to his martial arts and armor. Donatello managed to prevent the gas from escaping at the last moment. Shredder then destroys the supports of the antenna tower in which the gas canister is, so that the turtles are forced to support it. April appears with the mutagen canister on the roof and is also attacked by Shredder. In spite of the efforts of the Turtles, the antenna of the skyscraper tips over and threatens to drag everyone involved into the depths. With a lot of effort the Turtles and April can throw the shredder from the antenna onto the street. The part on which they are currently hanging breaks through completely and the antenna crashes towards the street with various stopovers on neighboring buildings. With a lot of luck, the five will land unharmed on the ground and can retreat into the sewer system before people can see them. Back in their devastated home, the Turtles manage to heal their master with a remnant of the mutagen. Splinter apologizes to his foster sons for having isolated them too much from the outside world for fear of their welfare.

A little later the Turtles buy a party car. One night they meet April and Vern under a road bridge to thank April for sacrificing her reporting career for the benefit of the safety of her new friends. After Michelangelo accidentally wrecks Vern's brand new car, the Turtles begin to freely - but still covertly - adapt to life on the surface.

Differences to the templates

The plot of the film adopts certain elements (or resembles them) from the genesis of an alternative version of the Ninja Turtles from the Mirage comics, the Super Turtles . This also includes the points that the turtles, as test animals in a laboratory, were deliberately injected with the mutagen and thereby attained superhuman strength; that Eric Sacks plays the role of an influential do-gooder there; the high-tech armor the shredder uses; and that the antagonists want to seize control of New York City with a fictitious threat. The Super Turtles appear in the Mirage comic issues Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol.4 # 7 and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol.2 # 47.

Further differences include that April was once the owner of the four turtles and named them, originally they had nothing to do with their mutation, while here in the film her father was involved in the use of the mutagen on them. The history of the shredder and its real name Oroku Saki are not mentioned here. In the comics and series, Karai was an important assistant to Shredder; in the Mirage comics she was even his successor. Here, however, she plays a rather insignificant supporting role.

background

Production preparation

After Nickelodeon acquired the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in October 2009 , it was announced that Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures would produce a film for 2012. Finally, at the end of May 2010, Michael Bay and his production company Platinum Dunes were hired to produce the film, which is supposed to bring a new Turtles film series off the ground. Initially, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum wrote the script; But since Paramount was not satisfied with the books, the two were replaced by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. In February 2012, Jonathan Liebesman was hired as a director - he had prevailed against Brett Ratner . The following month, Nickelodeon postponed the release to Christmas 2013.

In March 2012, Bay commented on the film, saying that he had new story ideas and that his turtles were descended from an alien breed. This triggered a debate among Ninja Turtles fans and received many negative reviews for these changes. The former actors from the 1990s films, Robbie Rist , Brian Tochi and Judith Hoag were also against these ideas. A few weeks later, Bay gave the all-clear and declared that the story would be based on the comics and that there would be no changes. At the same time, the film title was shortened in Ninja Turtles .

In August 2012, a draft script appeared on the Internet, which was not positively accepted by the fans and labeled as "even worse than feared". As it turned out later, this script had been put aside quite early. However, since there were still problems with the script, the theatrical release was again postponed from the end of 2013 to summer 2014.

On April 20, 2013, the film was renamed the final original title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . The budget was $ 125 million.

Others

It was considered beforehand that the Turtles should actually be aliens from space and not originated from a mutagen. Since this met with great displeasure from fans, these plans were quickly discarded. In one scene of the film, Fenwick asks if the Turtles are aliens, to which April replies in horror that this thesis is ridiculous.

Likewise, Eric Sacks was originally considered as a shredder, as was the character of an American colonel named Shrader. However, these ideas were also rejected due to the protests of the fans.

A small Easter egg was also added to the film. Splinter wondered how he could teach the Turtles to defend themselves if the day came when they'd leave the sewers to see the city upstairs. While sweeping, he finds a book 'Ninjutsu-Kunst' (Arts of Ninjutsu), written by the authors Eastman & Laird. This is a tribute to the two cartoonists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who are the inventors of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

occupation

In mid-February 2013, Megan Fox was given the first leading role. Fox's signing was received by the media with astonishment as there had been suicides between Fox and Bay: Fox had referred to Bay as Hitler and he fired her from the movie Transformers 3 . Fox took on the role of April O'Neil , for which Jessica Biel had also auditioned.

In March 2013, Alan Ritchson , Pete Ploszek , Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher were cast in the roles of the turtles Raphael , Leonardo , Donatello and Michelangelo . In contrast to the earlier feature films, the four actors did not slip into full-body dolls, but rather the film was realized using the performance capture process : the actors' movements and facial expressions were recorded at real locations and later transferred to a “turtle shell” on the computer. Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub have been hired for dubbing roles.

In early April 2013, Will Arnett's engagement became known as April's colleague Vernon Fenwick . In May 2013, William Fichtner and Abby Elliott were committed. Whoopi Goldberg was cast as Bernadette Thompson , a female version of Burne Thompson .

Filming

Filming began on March 22, 2013 in Tupper Lake , New York . The film was shot in New York City and at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh on Long Island . Production ended on August 6, 2013, and re-shoots took place in January and April 2014.

reception

Reviews

The film received rather negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 36 percent of reviewers gave the film a positive rating.

Justin Lowe of the Hollywood Reporter said, "the somewhat excessive running time of 101 minutes and the non-stop cartoon violence could put off the little fans of the franchise or their parents who pay the cinema ticket costs,". However, he finds that "the lifelike CGI turtles achieve a level of realism that the puppets in the original films could never communicate".

Justin Chang , a reviewer for the industry journal Variety , said that " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may look better than its live-action predecessors from the 90s, but the film manifests the unlovable attributes of a bay production - chaotic action, hair-raising humor, effects -Overkill and Megan Fox ”. In conclusion, he has to state that the film is not "as repulsive as Bay's" Transformers "films".

The film was nominated five times for the Golden Raspberry 2015 : In the categories "Worst Film", "Worst Supporting Actress" ( Megan Fox ), "Worst Remake or Sequel", "Worst Director" ( Jonathan Liebesman ) and "Worst Screenplay". The Best Supporting Actress award went to Megan Fox.

Grossing results

The film grossed $ 65 million on the opening weekend in the United States . With a production cost of $ 125 million, the film grossed $ 485 million worldwide through February 7, 2015.

Sequel

The sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was released in 2016 under the direction of director Dave Green and was again produced by Brad Fuller and Andrew Form for Platinum Dunes . The German theatrical release was on August 11, 2016.
