The Ninja Turtles ( English Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation ) is the title of a short-lived real series based on the comics about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the late 1990s. In German-speaking countries, the series was first broadcast on RTL in the Saturday morning program.
content
The series again adapts the familiar framework of the four Turtles Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Master Splinter and their archenemy Shredder. However, the series is expanded to include another fifth Turtle, the missing sister of the Turtles Mei Pieh Chi , also known by her nickname Venus de Milo (named after the famous statue Venus de Milo ). To introduce them, the "history" of the turtles was changed so that it was not four but five turtles that came into contact with the mysterious radioactive, green liquid that led to their mutation. However, Splinter only managed to pick up four of them; the fifth, Venus, was drifting in the sewer current. She got to New York's Chinatown, where a Chinese shinobi named Chung I found her and took care of her. Chung I took Venus to his hometown Shanghai, raised her and taught her the Shinobi martial arts.
Chung I revealed her true origin to Venus on her deathbed, whereupon she returned to New York and met her brothers there. In New York, Venus and her brothers fight together against a new enemy, the so-called "Dragon Lord", who commands an army of humanoid dragons.
additional
The series is based neither on the movies nor on the very successful cartoon series that was discontinued a year earlier. In addition to the introduction of the female fifth turtle Venus de Milo, there are other noticeable differences to the previous Turtles adaptations (and the comic book). Leonardo fights with a double-edged ninjatō instead of his katana and since nunchaku are banned in many places, Michelangelo received a pair of tonfa instead as a typical weapon.
criticism
The series is arguably the most unpopular Turtles series with fans and was discontinued after one season (a second, computer-animated season was planned, but was never completed).
One reason for the failure was the introduction of Venus de Milo. It was very unpopular with the fans and was seen by many as completely superfluous. Why it was invented in the first place is not entirely clear. There are two theories about this:
- It could be that Venus was invented by the television network Fox and the two creators of the Turtles were forced to include them in the series.
- Others believe Venus was created by Turtles co-inventor Kevin Eastman because he thought her character was a good idea.
Whichever theories may be true, it is clear that Turtles co-inventor Peter Laird dislikes Venus; he even deleted her profile from the official website for a short time.
Another reason for the big criticism was that in this series the Turtles - contrary to all other adaptations - are not blood related.
The martial arts of Venus also became a point of criticism: The arts of the shinobi were presented as a kind of magic in this series and thus clearly separated from ninjutsu. The word “shinobi” is actually just another term for “ ninja ”. So there is no difference between ninjas and shinobi.
Many also found it inappropriate that Venus' master, Chung I, was from China, even though ninjas are native to Japan. A Chinese ninja is not unthinkable, but many did not like the idea.
Another serious point of criticism besides the new Turtle Venus was their action itself and thus also their humor. Many found it stupid and too much based on the humor of the Power Rangers series . In addition to this stylistic connection, there is another connection between this Turtles series and the Power Rangers: In the Power Rangers episode Power Rangers: In Space: Enemies from the Underground there is a guest appearance on a crossover of the two series.
In addition, the real archenemy of the Turtles, Shredder, only appeared in the first two episodes.
