Wantagh is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in the US state of New York with 18,871 inhabitants (2010).
geography
Wantagh is located on Long Island , about 50 kilometers east of central Manhattan . To the south is Jones Beach Island with Jones Beach State Park .
history
The area was first settled by Metoac Indians before Dutch settlers arrived in the middle of the 17th century. The area was used for agriculture for a long time.
Around 1867 the area was connected to the network of the Long Island Rail Road railway line. It was not until the 1950s that the place developed into a suburban character.
In 1952 the Jones Beach Theater was opened, a large open-air arena for musicals and live music.
