Jones Beach Island

Jones Beach Iceland is one of the Outer Barrier Islands ( barrier island ) off the southern coast of Long Iceland in the US state of New York . It is named after Major Thomas Jones (~ 1665-1713), who came to Long Island in 1692, where he built the first brick house at Massapequa . In 1700 he also built a whaling state near what is now Jones Beach State Park . Jones Beach Island is sometimes referred to as Oak Beach Island after the infamous Oak Beach Inn .

geography

Jones Beach Island is separated from Long Island by Great South Bay , Jones Inlet, and Fire Island Inlet . Due to the changeable nature of the various bays and canals, the name " Fire Island " is occasionally applied collectively to all Barrier Islands. However, it originally refers specifically to the islands on Fire Island Inlet further east. Jones Beach Island is also on the county line between Nassau and Suffolk counties. On the island is also the census-designated place Gilgo , as well as Oak Beach-Captree with Captree State Park and West Gilgo Beach .

The south side of the island is known for its beaches on the open Atlantic . The most famous public beach in Jones Beach State Park on the western tip of the island is a summer recreation area for the residents of New York City .

Jones Beach Island is accessible from Long Island via the Meadowbrook State Parkway to Merrick at the west end, the Loop Parkway to Long Beach , and the Wantagh State Parkway to Wantagh . The east end is connected to Babylon and Fire Island via the Robert Moses Causeway . The Ocean Parkway connects all three streets and runs the length of the island.
