action

On 24. December 1803 Matilda Schultz was in the Australian fishing village Fairy Port born. She moved to the United States and Matilda worked as a clerk in a bakery store. At a young age, she married the handsome fisherman Sonny Dixon, who was killed in a shipwreck. Matilda's only joy now was giving the local children cupcakes and other sweets when they lost a tooth. When a fire in Matilda's house disfigured her face, she only ventured out of the house at night and with a porcelain mask, which made her fellow citizens eyed her more and more skeptical. One afternoon in September 1841 two boys disappeared. Inexplicably, the strange Matilda was blamed for it. An angry mob chased her out of her home at night and hanged her from a tree. Before the night was over, the missing children reappeared, who had only got lost in the forest. The residents of Fairy Port had to accept their mistake, but the lynching of the innocent widow Matilda Dixon founded the curse. For 150 years in Darkness Falls, the ghost of Matilda Dixon has been killing young children in the dark as soon as they lose their last baby tooth. She also wanted to kill Kyle Walsh, but instead killed his mother. Kyle is held responsible for the killing and admitted to a mental hospital.

Twelve years later, Walsh is released from the mental hospital. He has never forgotten the horror of the night his mother was killed. He learns that the ghost is threatening Michael Greene, the younger brother of his childhood friend Caitlin Greene. When he arrives in Darkness Falls, he is attacked by some primitive inhabitants. He is also quickly suspected of murder when a pub thug is killed by Matilda. Michael is due to undergo medical treatment while he is being put in a darkroom . Kyle prevents it, but is arrested shortly afterwards and locked up at the police station. Among the police officers he is considered a dangerous maniac. The ghost causes a power outage in the city, then kills numerous policemen at the police station. Kyle and one of the cops escape. They save Caitlin and Michael from the hospital, where Matilda kills some doctors and nurses.

The showdown takes place in a lighthouse where Kyle, Caitlin, Michael and a police officer are hiding. They hope that in the light they are invulnerable to the spirit. The lighthouse's gasoline-powered power generator turns out to be defective, and while it is being repaired, Matilda kills the policeman. She grabs Kyle and already wants to kill him, but Kyle struggles. The gasoline installation explodes and it is destroyed in the fire.

Reviews

  • David Hunter wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on January 24, 2003 that the actors' performances were anything but captivating ( less-than-riveting ). He described the film as a monotonous exercise ( dreary exercise ) in cheap shock effects that should be meant for children.
  • Kevin Thomas wondered in Los Angeles Times of 24 January 2003, that so much energy such garbage ( junk ) had dedicated. He attested that the film had a touch of humor, but immediately scoffed that the citizens of the small town should have burned the witch 150 years ago instead of hanging her.
  • Sabine Horst wrote in the newspaper Die Zeit on April 30, 2003 that the film would belong to a wave of serious horror films without irony, to which she also added the horror films Ring and 28 Days Later . She explained this by a new longing for commitment , which should not be easy to achieve in a confusing world. She saw this development as a dingy blessing for the film industry.

Awards

Emma Caulfield won the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Award in 2003 . The film was nominated for the 2003 Teen Choice Award for Best Horror Film.

additional

Production costs were approximately 11 million US dollars , the film played in the cinemas of the United States about $ 32 million a. It topped the US box office on the opening weekend, but dropped out of the top 20 after just 4 weeks.

At the start of the film, the production company published a fake television documentary. This suggests that the "witch" Matilda Dixon really existed. The documentary essentially reproduces the opening credits of the feature film.
