Peter Boeker

Peter Boeker (born May 11, 1916 in Oldenburg ; † January 12, 1986 in Bonn ) was a German crop and grassland scientist.

Live and act

Boeker, son of an agriculture teacher and fodder plant breeder, studied agriculture at the University of Bonn since 1946 and received his doctorate there in 1950 under Ernst Klapp with a dissertation on plant communities of permanent willows . After several years of assistantship at Klapp, he qualified as a professor in Bonn in 1957 in the field of arable and crop production. In 1960 he went to the University of Izmir ( Turkey ) as a lecturer in agriculture . In 1962 he returned to Bonn. In 1965 he moved to the Institute for Arable and Plant Production at the University of Hohenheim as a scientific adviser and professor . From 1969 to 1981 he held the chair for general crop production at the University of Bonn.

His main areas of work were grassland farming , forage production and lawn research . Boeker was a co-founder of the German Lawn Society and chairman of this specialist society for twenty years. Until 1986 he was one of the co-editors of the magazine "Rasen - Turf - Gazon". After Ernst Klapp's death, he reworked and edited his "grass determination key" (2nd edition 1978) and his "Taschenbuch der Gräser" (11th edition 1983). Boeker's practice-oriented research was recognized by being awarded the Golden Plaque by the Rhineland Chamber of Agriculture. From 1964 to 1969 Boeker was managing director and from 1973 to 1978 deputy chairman of the Society for Crop Science .
