Ferdinand Albert Pax

Ferdinand Albert Pax (born December 30, 1885 in Breslau ; † September 11, 1964 in Bad Honnef ) was a German zoologist specializing in marine biology .

Career

The son of the botanist Ferdinand Albin Pax (1858–1942) studied natural science with a focus on zoology from 1904 at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Breslau . He completed two semesters at the University of Zurich . He took courses in marine zoology at the Zoological Station in Trieste and at the Institute for Oceanography in Bergen (Norway) . With a dissertation on actiniidae he was in 1907 in Breslau Dr. phil. PhD . As an assistant at the Zoological Institute in Breslau, Pax mainly dealt with the fauna of Silesia and with marine flower animals . He spent many study visits at zoological stations on the Mediterranean.

In 1910 he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau with the writing Studies on West Indian Actinias . In 1912 he became curator of the Zoological Institute and the Museum of the University of Wroclaw. As a full professor , he was elected rector of the University of Breslau for the academic year 1913/14 . In 1916 he became a member of the Imperial German Regional Studies Commission for the General Government of Warsaw in the Reich Colonial Office .

Between 1934 and 1943, Pax and his students examined thermal and mineral springs for their fauna. On his initiative, the Hofeberg Biological Station was founded in the county of Glatz in 1933 . In 1946 Pax came to Bad Grund (Harz) . In 1948 he became director of the Institute for Marine Research in Bremerhaven . On January 1, 1951, he was retired at the age of 65.

Pax moved his residence to Cologne and published a large number of his research results in the years that followed until his death. Pax has published a total of 255 scientific papers. In 1962 Pax moved from Cologne to Bad Honnef , where he died at the age of 79.

Between 1942 and 1952, Pax also worked for the marine scientist Hans Hass for a fee. Hass sent him coral sticks and underwater photos collected during his expeditions, and Pax determined the zoological species. The corresponding correspondence is archived in the Hans Hass Institute.
