Wolfgang Seifen (* 1956 in Bergheim / Erft) is a German organist , composer and university lecturer for music and especially for organ improvisation.

Life

Wolfgang Seifen grew up in the industrial community of Oberaussem in the Bergheim district in the Rhenish lignite district west of Cologne. In the local parish church of St. Vinzentius he learned the basics of organ playing from organist Hermann Kräling. After studying church music at the Gregoriushaus in Aachen from 1973 to 1976, he was first church musician at St. Sebastian in Nettetal - Lobberich until 1983 . From 1983 to 2000 he was organist at the Papal Marienbasilika in Kevelaer .

At the same time he led the organ class for improvisation and liturgical organ playing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart from 1989 to 1992 . From 1992 to 2000 he held the same teaching position at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf , where he was appointed honorary professor in 1995 . Since October 2000 he has been professor for improvisation and liturgical organ playing at the University of the Arts in Berlin . In 2002 Cardinal Sterzinsky appointed him to the Church Music Commission of the Archdiocese of Berlin . Since 2003 he has been second chairman of the Conference of Directors of Catholic Training Centers for Church Music in Germany .

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

In 2004 he was appointed titular organist at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin , where he is the artistic director of the International Organ Improvisation Festival Berlin and (together with Helmut Hoeft ) of the organ concert series Meisterkonzerte Berlin . He has published numerous publications on organ building and organ improvisation and written numerous compositions for choir, organ and chamber music. He is also distinguished by numerous radio and television productions and CD recordings with organ improvisation.
