The Catholic University for Church Music St. Gregorius (KHK St. Gregorius) was a state-recognized church university in Aachen , which served the training of church musicians . It was closed in 2007.
history
The Catholic University for Church Music St. Gregorius was founded in 1881 as the Church Music School St. Gregorius House by Heinrich Böckeler . It was located on Eynattener Strasse not far from Aachen Central Station and consisted of a teaching building and the attached St. Gregorius Church . From 1934 the music school had to share the church with the newly founded Rectorate Parish St. Gregorius, which had been formed from the spin-off of St. Marien in Aachen and St. Johann in Burtscheid . After the teaching building and church were destroyed by bombing in April 1944 during the Second World War , the music school found new premises in Aachener Weyhestraße 16 at the foot of the Lousberg in the immediate vicinity of the Discalced Carmelite Monastery in Aachen . She took the name Gregoriushaus with her to the new domicile.
One of the most important lecturers in the early years and responsible for harmony and counterpoint was the Catholic clergyman and church musician Franz Nekes from October 9, 1887 , who also succeeded Heinrich Böckeler as collegiate bandmaster in 1891. Böckeler's successor as director of the Gregoriushaus was taken in 1899 by the Cologne Cathedral Vicar and later Bishop of Trier Franz Rudolf Bornewasser .
In 2000 the institution was solemnly elevated to the status of the Catholic University for Church Music St. Gregorius Aachen and was sponsored by the dioceses of Aachen , Essen , Trier and Cologne . This made it the second Catholic university for church music in Germany after the Rottenburg Catholic University for Church Music. Matthias Kreuels has been the rector of the university since it was re-established in 2000 ; However, it had to be closed in 2007 for cost reasons, as it last had only about 30 students. The building was then converted into an apartment building with condominiums.
