Hans-Josef Roth (born June 24, 1934 in Gebhardshain / Westerwald; † May 27, 2006 in Viersen - Dülken ) was a German organist , choir director and church music director in Aachen .

The son from a family of organists studied church music at the Catholic University for Church Music St. Gregorius in Aachen. He then began his church music career in 1954 as organist and choirmaster at St. Cornelius in Dülken , the largest parish in the Aachen diocese . During this period, Roth founded the Lower Rhine Chamber Choir Viersen-Dülken , which has performed in choir competitions to this day. In addition, Roth took on guest engagements with the Cologne men's singing association .

In 1974 Roth followed a call to his former training center in Aachen, where he was hired as a lecturer for choral conducting, Gregorian chant and organ playing. In addition to his planned and performed performances, he founded the St. Gregoriushaus chamber choir , with which he also performed several concert tours. In 1986 the diocese of Aachen appointed him to succeed Rudolf Pohl as the cathedral music director at Aachen Cathedral . In addition to his regular assignments with the Aachen Cathedral Choir at liturgical occasions, he was significantly involved in the establishment and implementation of the public and regular concert series evening music in the High Cathedral . A year later, he introduced the annual vacation and work stays on the island of Wangerooge for the members of the Aachen Cathedral Choir , where new program contents were discussed and rehearsed.

Roth, who has meanwhile been promoted to church music director, was one of the sponsors and initiators of the Aachen Choir Capella a Capella , which was founded in 1994 and was mainly recruited from former members of the cathedral choir boys of the Aachen cathedral choir school .

Hans-Josef Roth was considered an excellent organist and improviser and won first prize in the improvisation competition of the Austrian Ministry of Culture in 1966 and the competition in Haarlem in 1969 . He has won awards for his choirs, and several of his performances have been recorded for radio, television and record productions. His few compositional works are not so well known.

In 1986 Hans-Josef Roth was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on ribbon for his services to church music .

His most famous students include the organists and church musicians Joachim Aßmann, Stefan Engels , Ralph Leinen, Heinz-Josef Fröschen, Karl Hammans, Horst Herbertz, Klaus Peter Jamin, Eberhard Lauer , Leo Roder, René Rolle, Christian Rose, Andreas Rosenberger, Jutta Thommes and his successor in the office of cathedral music director Berthold Botzet .
