After finishing school, Berthold Botzet began studying church music with Helmut Schwindling at the episcopal church music school in Trier and then with Hans-Josef Roth at the Catholic University of Church Music St. Gregorius in Aachen . After successfully passing the A-exam in 1986 , Botzet moved to the Robert Schumann University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf , where he was preparing for his concert diploma in the organ class of Paul Heuser , which he passed in 1989. This was followed by individual courses in Gregorian chant and Gregorian semiology with Godehard Joppich at the Folkwang University of the Arts, as well as choral conducting and conducting with Volker Hempfling and Hermann Max .

As early as 1987, Botzet had been a lecturer at the St. Gregorius Church Music School in Aachen, but from 1989 he was employed as a cantor at the main parish church of St. Sebastian in Nettetal . In 2000 he returned to Aachen, where he was appointed to succeed his former teacher Hans-Josef Roth as the cathedral music director at Aachen Cathedral and thus director of the Aachen cathedral choir . Berthold Botzet is also responsible for the musical training of the Aachen Cathedral Boys' Choir.

In addition to the regular official missions as part of the liturgical celebrations in Aachen and the surrounding area, Botzet made numerous appearances in many places in Germany with the Aachen Cathedral Choir, which is considered the oldest German boys' choir, as well as several concert tours, including to Luxembourg, Switzerland, South Korea, Italy, Spain, Croatia, South Africa and in 2012 to the Czech Republic.

A special highlight in his work so far was the musical accompaniment on the occasion of the award of the Charlemagne Prize and the extraordinary Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen to Pope John Paul II in 2004 in the Vatican .

As part of the special concerts of Aachen Cathedral, Botzet has so far performed the four Passions by Johann Sebastian Bach , the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , the Te Deum and the Stabat Mater by Antonín Dvořák as well as the F minor Mass by Anton Bruckner . In 2009 he took part in the church choir project " International Choirs in the Cologne Dom " with the Aachen Cathedral Choir , with the In convertendo Dominus later being published on a double CD. Since the beginning of the International Chorbiennale , the Aachen Cathedral Choir has regularly participated in the international choir festival in Aachen under the direction of Botzet.

In addition to these full-time obligations, Botzet is one of the teachers at the Catholic seminary in Aachen and the permanent diaconate. He is also a member of the Church Music Commission of the Diocese of Aachen and a representative in the National Association of Pueri Cantores Germany.

In 2013, the Aachen Cathedral Choir under the direction of Botzets was awarded the Karl IV cultural prize.
