Laurentius Schlieker

Laurentius Schlieker OSB (born April 27, 1951 in Castrop-Rauxel ) is a German Benedictine monk , church musician and freely resigned abbot of Gerleve Abbey .

Life

Marian Schlieker joined the Benedictine Abbey of Gerleve in 1969 , where he took the religious name Laurentius. He studied theology, philosophy and Gregorian chant at the Benedictine University of Sant'Anselmo in Rome and Aachen . After his profession on April 16, 1974, he was ordained a priest on August 10, 1976 by Reinhard Lettmann , Bishop of Münster . In addition to his pastoral work, he oversaw a series of lectures and concerts at Gerleve Abbey. From 1993 to 1998 he was archivist of Gerleve Abbey and published historical works about the abbey.

In 2006 he was by the Convention for Prior - administrator selected. On August 24, 2009 he was elected the fifth Abbot of Gerleve and successor to Pius Engelbert . The ordination in the Gerlever Abbey Church was donated to him on October 24, 2009 by the Bishop of Münster, Felix Genn . His motto is ubi vult spirat (It blows where it wants.).

In 2008 he initiated the establishment of the Gerleve Abbey Foundation to support Gerleve Abbey.

On April 19, 2020, Abbot Laurentius resigned from his post as ruling Abbot of Gerleve for health reasons, as announced on December 15, 2019. On August 15, 2020, the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary , the Gerlever monks elected Father Andreas Werner as his successor in accordance with the statutes of the Beuron congregation.

Laurentius Schlieker studied from 1980 to 1982 at the Conservatory of St. Gregorius House (later: Catholic University for Church Music St. Gregorius ) in Aachen. He taught Gregorian chant at the University for Church Music of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia (1987-1993) and at the University of Music Detmold in Dortmund (1988-1992).

He is considered an excellent organist and church musician. He has been giving concerts at home and abroad since 1985 and has released CDs , some with other artists, with his own compositions and organ meditations.
