Pius Engelbert

Pius Engelbert OSB (born October 28, 1936 in Cologne ) is a Benedictine monk , emeritus abbot of Gerleve Abbey and church historian .

Life

Karl-Heinz Engelbert joined after graduation 1956, the Congregation of Benedictines in Gerleve in and took the religious name Pius on. In 1957 he made his profession and studied theology and philosophy at the Benedictine College Sant'Anselmo in Rome . On September 15, 1962, he was ordained a priest . In 1964 he graduated as a bibliographer and archivist in historical auxiliary sciences at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies . In 1966 he was at Sant'Anselmo with Scripture The Vita Sturmi of Eigil of Fulda to Dr. theol. PhD .

From 1981 to 1999 he was professor of church history at the University of Saint Anselm orden own and at the Pontifical Gregorian University . From 1981 to 1999 he represented the Beuron Benedictine Congregation as General Procurator in Rome.

In 1991 he was elected prior in Gerleve and in 1999 as the successor to Clemens Schmeing as abbot of the Benedictine Abbey Gerleve in the diocese of Münster ; he received the benediction on September 19, 1999 from Bishop Reinhard Lettmann . His motto is Sanctificetur nomen tuum (hallow your name). After his retirement in 2006 he lived in the primate abbey of Sant'Anselmo and was again active in academia. In 2013 he returned to Gerleve.

In 2010 the Vatican religious congregation appointed old abbot Pius Engelbert as apostolic visitor to Ettal Abbey , which was shaken by an abuse scandal. Engelbert was able to clarify that the superiors responsible for the monastery in 2010 were not to be blamed.

He has published numerous essays and academic papers in the field of church and religious history. Since 1993 he has been a member of the extended group of editors of the Roman quarterly of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society and is a member of the board of directors of the institute in Rome. Engelbert has been a scientific member of the Historical Commission for Hesse since 1980 .
