Clemens Schmeing

Clemens Schmeing OSB (born April 28, 1930 in Coesfeld ; † April 29, 2018 in Nottuln ) was a German Benedictine monk and abbot of Gerleve Abbey from 1971 to 1999 .

Life

Clemens Schmeing visited the school Nepomucenum Coesfeld and entered Gerleve the religious order of the Benedictines at. In 1952 he made his profession and studied theology and philosophy. In 1956 he was ordained a priest .

In 1959 he was at the Benedictine College Saint Anselm in Rome with a moral-theological study of Maurus Schenkl to Dr. theol. PhD . He taught philosophy at Gerleve Abbey and became a novice master in 1963.

In 1971 he was elected by the convent to succeed Pius Buddenborg as abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Gerleve in the diocese of Münster . His motto was Sicut qui ministrat : “As one who serves” ( Lk 22.27  EU ). From 1981 until his retirement in 1999 Schmeing represented the Beuron Congregation in Rome as procurator. From 1999 to 2006 he was the chaplain of the St. Hildegard Abbey in Eibingen.

Schmeing also became known for his radio speeches on WDR and Deutschlandfunk.
