Maurus von Schenkl ( baptized name : Georg Jakob von Schenkl ; born January 4, 1749 in Auerbach in the Upper Palatinate , † June 14, 1816 in Amberg ) was a German Benedictine priest , Roman Catholic theologian and librarian .

Life

Little is known about Schenkl's childhood. From 1760 to 1765 he attended the Jesuit high school in Amberg . He then went to the Benedictine Abbey inprüfunging . One of his relatives was already a member of the order there. He moved fromprüfunging to Scheyern Abbey . On October 2, 1768, he took the religious vows there and took the name Maurus. He studied theology at the religious institutions and was ordained a priest in 1772 . He then held several offices in the order, including for the first time a librarianship, in 1777 he became an economist in Puch, but shortly afterwards took over pastoral care .

In 1778 Schenkl became a professor of dogmatics, morality, pastoral law and church law at the Weltenburg Benedictine Abbey . In 1783 he followed a call back toprüfunging, where he became librarian and professor of canon law. In 1785 he was appointed professor of morality, and in 1788 again as professor of canon law, now together with the professorship of dogmatics. In 1790, with the consent of the order, he was to move to a state university. He accepted the professorship of canon law, morality and pastoral care at the Lyceum in Amberg , shortly afterwards he became the reign of the local seminary . In 1794 he was finally rector of the institution. He held this office until 1798. In 1796 he turned down a call to the University of Ingolstadt , in 1804 a call to Aschaffenburg , although the latter would have been associated with a position as canon . In addition to a salary increase, he received the title of electoral real clergyman for his last reputation rejected .

In 1804 he resigned as a seminar leader and instead became director of the Amberg Provincial Library . From 1813 his health was badly damaged, but held his last lectures in Amberg until 1816.
