Frank Gerhardt (born May 17, 1967 in Hünstelden / Kirberg ) is a German composer.

Life

His musical career began in Frankfurt am Main . After studying piano and harpsichord at the Hoch Conservatory, he studied music theory and composition with Claus Kühnl at the same institute . He then moved to the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts , where he studied composition with Hans Zender from 1994 to 1998 and where Frank Gerhardt has been teaching music theory and electro-acoustic composition himself since 2000. Since 2009 he has also been leading the composition class at the Kassel Music Academy .

Frank Gerhardt's musical work includes almost all instrumental and vocal genres as well as numerous electroacoustic pieces and music for dance theater, is regularly performed at home and abroad and is documented by CD and radio productions. Various commissioned works were created for official occasions such as the 1200th anniversary celebration in Frankfurt or the Expo 2000 as well as for the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Young German Philharmonic, the KNM Berlin, Ensemble Modern and other important ensembles and festivals.

Awards and grants

Frank Gerhardt received various prizes and grants for his compositions, including the Hessian Composition Prize 1998 and the Prize of the Composition Competition Contemporary Sacred Music as part of the European Church Music Festival Schwäbisch Gmünd 2006. In 2000/2001 he was a scholarship holder at the International Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia and 2001 / 2002 at the Berlin Academy of the Arts . In 2003 a stay at the German Study Center in Venice followed .
