David Briggs (organist)

David Briggs (born November 1, 1962 in England ) is an English organist , composer and university professor .

Life

At the age of 17 Briggs had already distinguished himself in organ competitions and received various scholarships . From 1981 to 1984 he studied at King's College of Cambridge University . At the same time he studied in Paris with Jean Langlais .

After completing his studies, he took a position as organist in Hereford before he was appointed organist and choirmaster at Truro Cathedral in 1989 . In 1994 he moved to an equivalent position at Gloucester Cathedral , where he worked until 2002.

Since then he has been traveling internationally on concert tours . He also teaches at Cambridge University , is a regular member of international competition juries, for example in Germany at the European Church Music Festival , and gives master classes at various universities and conservatories in Europe and North America . He is also currently Artist in Residence at St. James Cathedral in Toronto .

Briggs' work has won many awards. He was the first British winner of the Tournemire Prize at the St Albans International Organ Festival and won first prize at the International Improvisation Competition in Paisley.
