Tony Salmelainen (born August 8, 1981 in Espoo ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player , who in the course of his career for the HIFK Helsinki and Ilves Tampere in the SM-liiga , the Genève-Servette HC in the National League A and various other clubs in Europe and North America was active.
Career
Tony Salmelainen began his career with the Kiekko-Espoo juniors , before moving to the junior division of the HIFK Helsinki shortly after the start of the 1997/98 season. He was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as 41st by the Edmonton Oilers .
In the 1999/00 season he ran for the first time for the men's team of the HIFK in the Finnish SM-liiga and scored a goal in his first game, but had to sit out for the rest of the season due to an injury from the same game. After 19 games the following season, he moved to Ilves Tampere for two years .
In the 2003/04 season Salmelainen played for the first time in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers. In 2005 he returned to Europe, played again at HIFK and was one of the most successful players in the SM-liiga in the 2005/06 season. Salmelainen made headlines when he was sent off the ice in a game against HPK in the 2005-06 season and threw a trash can down a corridor to the dressing rooms in anger. He hit his team's bus driver on the head. Salmelainen was interrogated by the police and was suspended for two games.
On January 26, 2006, the Edmonton Oilers Salmelainen exchanged for defender Jaroslav Špaček of the Chicago Blackhawks . For the Blackhawks Salmelainen completed the 2006/07 season. On June 16, 2007 Salmelainen was transferred together with Jassen Cullimore to the Montréal Canadiens , who gave up Sergei Samsonow . Shortly afterwards, the Canadiens bought Salmelainen out of his contract.
On August 31, 2007 he signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs , who used him exclusively on the farm team. Therefore Salmelainen broke the contract and returned to Europe, where he played for Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the super league.
In the 2009/10 season he was PostFinance top scorer of HC Servette Genève and reached the Swiss runner-up with the club. In the final series, he was given a match penalty and a four-game suspension in the fifth game after a brutal check on Etienne Froidevaux , so that he was no longer allowed to play in the last two finals.
In November 2013, he ended his career due to an injury. Since 2014 he has been the coach of CP Meyrin from a regional Swiss 2nd division.
