Radim Vrbata (born June 13, 1981 in Mladá Boleslav , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . The right winger played over 1,000 games for seven teams in the National Hockey League between 2001 and 2018 , most of them for the Phoenix / Arizona Coyotes . With the Czech national team he won the gold medal at the 2005 World Cup .
Career
Radim Vrbata began his career in the offspring of HC Mladá Boleslav , who played in the junior extra league until the end of the 1997/98 season. In the summer of 1998 he decided to move to North America and completed a total of three seasons in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec for the Olympiques de Hull and Cataractes de Shawinigan . During the 1999 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the seventh round by the Colorado Avalanche in a total of 212th place. His first appearance in a men's team was in the AHL play- offs in 2001 when he played a game for the Hershey Bears .
The following season he continued to play with the Bears in the AHL, but was appointed to the NHL Avalanche squad in November 2001. He played his first NHL game on November 20, 2001 against the New York Rangers , where he also scored his first NHL goal. From then on he was a permanent member of the Avalanche squad and reached the second round of the 2002 playoffs with his team . In March 2003, Vrbata was given to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Bates Battaglia . During the lockout 2004/05 he played in his home country with Bílí Tygři Liberec and reached third place in the Extraliga , he also completed two second division games for his home club. After returning to the Hurricanes in 2005, he was given over to the Chicago Blackhawks on December 30, 2005 . In Chicago he was able to improve his game and his point yield significantly, but was still sent to the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2007 , who in return gave Kevyn Adams to the Blackhawks.
After a very successful season in Phoenix for Vrbata, he signed a three-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2008 . However, since he found his way there very poorly and only scored three goals in the first two months of the season, he was released from the Lightning team at his own request and loaned to his home club BK Mladá Boleslav. A few weeks later he loaned him to HC Liberec , where Vrbata ended the season. Since Tampa still had the transfer rights of the Czech, they transferred him back to Arizona on July 21, 2009 to the Coyotes, who in return sent Todd Fedoruk and David Hale to Tampa.
In July 2014, he signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks as an unrestricted free agent . There he played in the following season with 63 points in 78 games, the highest point season of his NHL career and with 31 goals was the most successful goalscorer within the team. In August 2016, after his contract expired, he returned to the Arizona Coyotes , where he played his 1000th game in the NHL during the 2016/17 season. In July 2017, the Czech joined the Florida Panthers , with whom he spent his final NHL season and finally declared his active career over after the 2017/18 season. In total, Vrbata had completed 1099 games and scored 641 points scorer.
