Tomáš Kopecký (born February 5, 1982 in Ilava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey striker who was most recently under contract with HC Slovan Bratislava in the Continental Hockey League .

Career

Tomáš Kopecký began his career in the 1995/96 season with the juniors of HC Dukla Trenčín in Slovakia. In 1996/97 he was able to stand out with 47 points in 47 games and a value of +55 in the plus / minus rating. After further good performances in the following years he was allowed to play in the 1999/2000 season for the professional team of Trenčín in the Slovakian extra league.

Kopecký was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round at position 38 during the 2000 NHL Entry Draft . He then moved to North America in the Canadian Junior League WHL and played there for the Lethbridge Hurricanes . In addition to his games in the WHL, he was also three times for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , the then farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, in the AHL and was able to score a goal and an assist. He also proved his qualities as a scorer in the two years in the WHL. In a total of 109 games he scored 126 points. In the summer of 2002, he moved to the Grand Rapids Griffins , Detroit's new farm team in the AHL. In his first year he had a solid performance with 38 points. In 2003/04 and 2004/05 he was absent for a long time due to injuries and was only able to play 48 games each in both years, and the points yield was rather disappointing.

The 2005/06 season went better again, and with 72 points he was at the end of the season in 20th place on the scorer list of the AHL and in fourth place in the team's internal ranking. In addition, Kopecký was allowed to play his first game for the Red Wings in the NHL in February 2006 . In July 2006 he received a new one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings and was part of the NHL squad at the beginning of the 2006/07 season due to his performance in the AHL. He scored a goal in the first 26 games but then broke his collarbone in December 2006 and fell out until the end of the regular season. Nevertheless, the Red Wings extended his contract prematurely by two years. In the conference final of the playoffs, he made his comeback for Detroit against the Anaheim Ducks . In the 2007/08 season Kopecký established himself as a regular for the Red Wings and played mainly in the defensive fourth attack line. He scored five goals and seven assists and remained largely injury-free before tearing a cruciate ligament in the penultimate game after a collision with an opponent and the season was thus over for him. Without Kopecký, the Red Wings finally went into the playoffs, where they could beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final and won the Stanley Cup .

In terms of sport, he was able to improve somewhat in the 2008/09 season and partially represented Tomas Holmström in the first row of attacks. Again Detroit moved to the Stanley Cup final, but Kopecký was absent again due to injury after he broke his cheekbone in a fist fight in the second round series against Anaheim. However, this time the Red Wings lost the new edition of last year's final between Detroit and the Pittsburgh Penguins. After his contract expired in the summer of 2009, Kopecký signed with the Chicago Blackhawks . With these he also won the Stanley Cup in the 2009/10 season .

On June 27, 2011, the Blackhawks transferred Kopecký transfer rights - four days before he would have become a free agent - in exchange for a performance-related seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Florida Panthers . Two days later, the Slovak agreed on a four-year contract with the Florida Panthers. There, however, after the decline in performance after the 2014/15 season, he did not receive a new contract and decided in October 2015 to return to Europe due to a lack of offers from the NHL, where he joined the Czech first division club HC Oceláři Třinec . For Třinec he scored 20 points scorer in 43 games, but returned to his home club in Trenčín in October 2016. There he was only under contract for a few weeks before he was signed by HC Slovan Bratislava from the Continental Hockey League . A few weeks later he was released from HC Slovan.
